European Car Low Emission Zone

Hi everyone,

This is my first time posting here – I have an upcoming road trip by car and I’m currently sorting out the environmental/low emission zone (LEZ) requirements. I just want to make sure I’ve covered everything correctly to avoid any unexpected fines. If anyone has experience with similar trips, I’d really appreciate any tips or advice!

Car: Toyota Corolla 2019 Petrol Hybrid

Here’s what I’ve done so far:

  • France – Ordered a single Crit’Air sticker (Green) which covers all applicable zones.
  • Germany – Ordered the Umweltplakette (Class 4 Green) from Berlin's official website; should be valid throughout Germany.
  • Belgium – Registered my car with both Ghent and Antwerp low emission zones.
  • Netherlands – No registration needed; my car meets the emission standards.
  • Denmark – No registration required.

Thanks in advance for your help and insights!

Germany: you can buy an Umweltplakette for a car but you cannot order the color because this depends on the car's emission data - for this reason the registration needs the car papers. For all modern cars the result will be a green Umweltplakette which you have to place and stick on the right side of the front window.

Be aware that a few cities have Diesel ban zones - see ADAC article in German language.

The French National Assembly just voted this week to do away with low emissions zones (known as ZFEs in France). It wasn't a final vote, and it's possible that the Constitutional Council could rule that they way they did it was not allowable, but LEZs are most probably going away in France for now,

Brussels has an LEZ as well - if it looks like you are even remotely passing through Brussels I would register for that as well. Otherwise you are good to go for Belgium.
