I am writing to find out more information about free campsites in Europe.
We are planning on driving around Europe from the UK (Northern France, Northern Italy, South France, South Coast of Spain, and Portugal) in a new 'Campercar' hired from Spaceship in July/August.
If anyone has any information regarding free campsites within Europe that would be fantastic!

There is free campsites available for people travelling in campervans in France, check out www.france-passion.com I was wondering if there was anything similar in Spain or Portugal etc.

The answer to your question can be found on the FAQ page of their website.
Be aware that the reason that they are "free" is because of a membership fee, an expectation/hope that you will buy from the site provider and that they are well away from population centres.
Make sure that you have your IDPs.

Hey Wonderful, what is a "camping carnet? It seems like a usual thing that one may be asked for their passport by what amounts here to an innkeeper. Can you clarify?
I might also add there is a reason why you need "a self contained motorhome (water and waste)".... the definition of camping site is probably fairly flexible!
