Europe trip late october

Hi guys. I am planning a europe trip between oct 27, 2022 and november 5,2022 with my wife. I am planning to visit swizterland first and then paris. Approximately 3 to 4 nights in swiz and 3 in paris. Would all the rail lines and attractions be open in swiz during that time ? Is it advisable to visit during this time or plan an alternate destination in europe instead ?

Yes, there are no issues with rail lines shutting down and attractions will be open. There may be a few things that may be in transition, changing from the Summer Season and getting ready for Ski season, and depending on weather, some high alpine stuff might be limited, but for 3-4 days you can find plenty to do.

The Swiss trains will all be running but some of the mountain lifts will not be. The summer schedule for the lifts up to Männlichen (cablecar from Wengen and gondola from Grindelwald) ends 23 October, and I suspect they may shut down for maintenance until ski season starts. The Schilthornbahn will run through October, but the Allmendhubel funicular stops running on October 17 until December.

Some hotels and restaurants in the smaller towns that rely on tourists and skiers close for a break in late autumn.

But a bigger concern is the mountain weather, which can be cold, cloudy, rainy, and/or snowy. I personally would not spend my time and money in Switzerland and the Alps in late October; I would head to lower elevations in France (maybe Alsace) or Italy. Or spend the time in and around Paris.

X2 for the Alsace option. Save Switzerland for when you have a much better chance of seeing the mountains up close and personal.

I agree about potential bad weather at high altitudes in the Fall. It's the same way in the Colorado Rockies--rainy. I remember once flying out of Switzerland the end of August, and we saw rain and snow then.

We prefer to spend our mountain time in Austria around Innsbruck. If there's bad weather, we'll slide over to Salzburg or even Vienna as an alternative place to go. Or, we can go thru the Brenner Pass by train and go down to Venice and/or Florence.

This is a very short trip.

Seven days on the ground. Paris plus "Switzerland" (a country, not a single place). It will burn a full day getting from one to the other, so six usable days (maybe just 5 if not flying in to one, and out of the other; if flying round-trip into/out of one city, just five full usable days). End of October/early November: short days, it'll get dark early.

I'm thinking that 5 or 6 days spread between Paris + "Switzerland" is stretching too far (unless OP+wife go there often and it's no biggie to return another time...but based on the way the question was framed, I'm guessing that's not the case). Going to Europe for a week is not an efficient use of your air fare money (you get more from that money by staying longer, if you can). Sometimes that's your only option. Some lucky people get to go to Europe very frequently and it's easy to write-off the cost of air fare for such a short trip. But the ratio of time spent (getting there/back + getting around) to time spent (being there) starts to look a bit lopsided. Only the OP can decide if it's "worth it."

To enjoy the tip more and get more out of it, I'd suggest staying longer or limiting the geographical targets.

Paris offers huge menu of opportunities with relative ease for traveling from point to point without consuming much travel time.

Switzerland offers a menu of opportunities consuming time to get form point to point.

Both are wonderful to visit, but a combination over a week of travel time is not a good mix (plus weather impact during Oct/Nov within Switzerland).

Recommend staying in an apartment within Paris and taking a deep dive into the visit with a day trip or two.
