Europe trip - help needed

Hi folks,

Planning for a honeymoon trip estimate 20 days and its our first time into europe. These are the places that we’ll be interested and planned route:
Singapore - Munich - Salzburg - Vienna - Budapest - Prague - Munich - Singapore

Few questions:
1. Is this route too ambitious? and if the sequence make sense?
2. would train be the best option through out our time in eu? should we book eurail pass or should we bookn point to point? great if we get a breakdown in terms of estimate cost given that we’re booking way in advance.
3. how many days should we cater for each location?
4. any other recommendation, additional location to visit or any other feedbacks?

objectives: sight seeing, food, history and architectural

Thank u in advance.

Sounds OK. 20 days (19 nights) ÷ 5 locations = 3-4 nights per location, that is OK.
Is it possible to fly "open jaw", into one city and out of another. That would avoid doubling back and wasting time.

Munich - Salzburg - Vienna - Budapest is all in a straight line, and has a good train service.
Prague is an outlier, North of the rest.
You could do Prague first: Prague - Munich - Salzburg - Vienna - Budapest, fly into Prague and out of Budapest, if this is possible.

2 would train be the best option through out our time in eu? should we book eurail pass or should we bookn point to point? great if we get a breakdown in terms of estimate cost given that we’re booking way in advance.

Yes, train. All are only a few hours from each other and too close to fly.
A Eurail pass is not the best way. Once you have decided the exact dates, buy cut-price advance tickets direct from the railway company websites.
How to do that is complicated, save that for the next post. Or read these webpages:

I take it that you live in Singapore?
You are flying round trip in and out of Munich?
If you don't have tickets yet, consider flying into one city and out of another. That way you don't have to backtrack and it gives you extra time.

Do you mean 20 days in Europe or 20 days away from home? Count nights in Europe. If you have 19 nights, you really have only 18 full days. Even if you land early in the morning, it usually takes 2-3 hours to get through the airport and to your hotel, then have lunch. After a long flight, you may be in a jetlagged haze for the rest of the day and not really soak in much. Unless you have an evening flight home, you won't be able to see or do much on your last day either.

I'm guessing that you're flying round-trip Munich because there are non-stop flights. I'd take the train to Salzburg and spend 3 nights (3N). You'll want to be in Munich at the end of the trip to be near the airport, so going right to Salzburg saves one hotel change. Then train to Vienna (3-4N), then train to Budapest (3-4N), then fly to Prague (train takes too long) (3-4N), then train or fly to Munich (3-4N). Remember, 3 nights gives you 2 full days. You'll use about 1/2 day in travel (door-to-door) each time you move.

Whether you spend 3 or 4 nights in a city really depends on what you want to see and do there. You can see Salzburg's highlights in a day. But since you'll still be recovering from the time change, you should stay the extra day. You will certainly find enough to enjoy to fill 2 days. I didn't find Munich particularly to my liking, but I could have spent more than 3 full days in Prague, and I have spent more than that in Vienna and Budapest.

BTW you haven't told us when you are planning to visit. That could change our recommendations.

Too many places in too short a time IMHO.

As stated previously, begin by being honest with yourself: how many full days do you really have in Europe, not counting your arrival day nor your departure day, regardless of what time those flights are (you can not honestly count those as usable days).

The sequence does not make sense. Fly in to one city and out of another. If you have to double-back to return to your arrival point, you will waste both money and time.

I would drop at least one stop (probably Budapest) and then try and find a sequence that most closely resembles a straight line. Fly in to one end of that line, fly out of the other.

Remember that it will take time to move between one city and another - that will typically consume half a day, even if you are efficient. Basic logistics (hotel check-in/check-out, navigating, finding your way around, getting lost, deciding on a place to eat, etc.) consumes time every day.

Hi,

Are you flying Singapore Airlines? If your trip begins after 31 May, there is a direct day train from Prague to Munich. If you decide to skip Prague, there is a night train from Budapest to Munich...another option.

Fly from Singapore to Munich - 1 night
1:28 train journey to Salzburg - 3 nights
2:22 train journey to Vienna - 4 nights
2:20 train journey to Budapest - 4 nights
6:26 train journey to Prague - 3 nights
5:45 train journey to Munich - 4 nights

I’d book point to point tickets.
Visit Austrian Rail Jet for the first 3 trains.

Then visit Czech Railways for trains to/from Prague.

To clarify, you must use a multi-destination search function to fly into one city and home from another. The itinerary is not a set of two one-way tickets. Using matrix.itasoftware.com (a Google service which provides data but doesn't sell tickets) I see a round trip ticket two months from now is about 50 Singapore dollars cheaper than a multi-city ticket, but you save the cost, and especially the time, of returning to Munich for your home flight.

Hi,

When you do a round trip ticket, (I do the same), you could use the day of arrival as a day of rest or lesser importance, then use the return date ie, the second time in Munich as the time to visit and explore, even easier if you could back tract by night train but there is no night route (direct) between Prague and Munich, as there is between Vienna and Munich and also Budapest and Munich, if you choose to skip Prague. In those cases I take the night train option.

Not overly ambitious, but i would cut one stop; probably Salzburg. Fly Czech Air from Budapest to Prague otherwise its an all day train ride. The flight can be as cheap as 100 dollars. Early to mid October is a great time of year in the region.
