We leave Tuscany on 25th March and want to plan minimal driving sight-seeing travel for the appx 17 days between that and when we leave for London on 12th April. Considering some river cruises such as Viking's Chalon-sur-Saone to Avignon or Marseille to Lyon. Or a UniWorld cruise from Marseille to Chalon. Or, could avoid France and take a more northern route through Austria, Switzerland, Germany by train (can't find river cruises in our timeframe). ANY THOUGHTS?
Christine,
Take a look at Grand Circle Travel; they have a 14-day Danube-Main-Rhine cruise from Regensburg [near Munich] to Amsterdam starting on March 28 in Regensburg [the site shows a start date of March 27 but that is for the overnight flight from the US to Munich]. There is also a pre-trip extension for 3 days in Vienna that would likely start on March 25. We [80-yr-old mother, 15-yr-old daughter, and I] did a similar trip [Vienna to Amsterdam] with GCT last summer and enjoyed it very much. I especially liked the lack of unpacking... but they also had good food, good programs, and interesting people. Go to gct.com and click on European River Cruises as the Region.
Something like this might work for your northern option: http://www.tourvacationstogo.com/switzerland_tours.cfm?npid=8676&nhr=1
