Europe - Munich

We are flying into Munich this summer and will have a day to explore Munich. If we stay in a hotel near the airport, can we get into downtown Munich by subway or bus from that far out?

train from airport to downtown is not that bad. munich is also pretty safe so it's ok to stay out late. the hotel desk at airport found me 2 good ones a few years back and can tell you they're good values, hope you find the same.

Hi, Ask at your hotel if the " Lufthansa Airport Bus" swings by the hotel. If so, take that to Munich Hbf. From there you can take the U-Bahn or walk to the sights...Karlsplatz, Marienplatz and all the way Viktualien Markt, etc.

Mary, I'm not clear why you want to stay close to the airport rather than in Munich? It will be much easier to enjoy sights in the beautiful city of Munich if you stay there. If you decide to stay near the airport and can access the airport rail station, the trip from there to the city is ~52 minutes via S-Bahn (S1 or S8). The U-Bahn (Subway) doesn't go that far out. Happy travels!

Fred,
Haven't heard of the Lufthansa Airport Bus. What does it cost? Thanks for your reply, Mary

Mary, For the "Lufthansa Airport Bus" I don't know the cost, but it stops on the other side of München Hbf., ie., on Arnuftstrasse, not Bayerstrasse. I believe the bus stop is front of the Taxistelle (where the taxis line up)...can't miss it. If that bus makes a stop at your hotel as it's going to the Hbf., you're in luck.

You're flying into Munich? Where are you going next, and how are you getting there? The airport is way out of town; unless you're flying or driving the next day, I'd strongly suggest that you stay in Munich.

"in a hotel near the airport" There are many places near the airport. Do you mean actually in the airport? Unless you stay at a very expensive hotel in the airport, you might have to take transportation from there to the airport S-Bahn station. On the other hand, Freising, which is a 20 min bus ride from the airport, has an S-Bahn (S1) station. You can go directly from Freising into town. On the other line (S8), Halbermoos is near the airport and has a direct link to downtown. From Freising to Marienplatz takes 47 min.; from Halbermoos takes 31 min to Marienplatz. If you stay at the airport, the S8 takes 38 min to Marienplatz. S-Bahns leave those places every 20 min during the day. There are also regional trains through the Freising Bahnhof to the Hauptbahnhof with any S-bahn from there to Marienplatz - 36 min. If you stay in Erding, it's a 28 min trip into Marienplatz on the S2, slightly faster by regional train to Ostbahnhof and then any S-Bahn. With the S-bahn, a €20 Partner Gesamtnetz Tageskarte will give all of you all day, on/off use of all the transit in the Munich metro area, meaning round trips for two of you and buses, if necessary, to the S-Bahn station. The airport bus will cost you €17 per person round trip and will not include any other transport, for instance, the Hbf to Marienplatz by S-Bahn.
