Europe invents a new sin: Pizza Americana

Okay, I first saw "Pizza Americana" 2 weeks ago in Geneva. My wife says kids at the international school where she teaches also talk about it. Since then I´ve seen it on other menues. A quick google confirms it is indeed a menu fad in Europe. The article claims it started in Italy. So what is it?? Believe it or not, it is a sausage (or "hot dog") pizza smothered in French Fries! I think the following link (with photo!) says it best: "It is neither American or Pizza." But I confess --purely in the interest of cultural research-- I ordered one. It was outrageously yummy. But now I´m gonna have to eat nothing but salad for a month to get my cholesterol back down. I´m not sure if we Americans should be offended by this or gladly take the credit. :-) Happy travels!

Looks about as American as "filet Americain". Although, I have seen fries served directly on sandwiches and kebabs in Europe before, so this combination probably shouldn't be too shocking.

In Naples two years ago we saw some panini in a cafe window that were a large hotdog with the tips sliced in quarters on a sub shaped roll smothered in french fries for one euro. I wish I knew how to post a picture here as I have a close up pic.

They sell frozen pizzas in Germany called "American pizzas" and they usually have BBQ pork on them and corn. In fact, they like to put corn in anything and then label it American. I worked at a restaurant for a while and their best idea was to serve nachos with corn and kidney beans on them. gag!

I've seen hot dog and fries on pizzas for as long as I've lived in Italy (6+ years). I've never seen an American order one, but often Italian kids do.

I remember being in Paris back in 2002 and there was this "American Style Brownie" craze that had swept the city:) Everywhere I went there were signs in English outside a lot of bakeries bragging that only they sold the best and most authentic "American Style Brownies". The whole thing was bizarre; as the signs were in English they were obviously trying to attract tourists. I finally scummed, bought one, and it was mushy and under baked. On the flip side I was in Hong Kong last January, and a similar "New York Style Cheesecake" craze had hit that city...even my hotel was offering free slices in the lobby:) I love cheesecake and did sample it a few establishments, and on the whole it was indeed very good New York Style Cheesecake...Juniors would be proud!

Somewhat related to the topic: I think that finds like this as you travel are interesting peeks into what Italians or Chinese must think when they come to America and see what passes for "their" cuisine.

"I think that finds like this as you travel are interesting peeks into what Italians or Chinese must think when they come to America and see what passes for "their" cuisine." Most Italian nationals that I have asked this question to seem to indicate that what we call "Italian food" is mostly Sicilian with a bit of Neopolitan thrown in.

Yes, I think many immigrants that influenced "Italian" food in the US were Sicilian; Of course over time, we "improved" it...making it richer, meatier, more cheese, spicier or sweeter...a process that would apply to Chinese or even Mexican food in the US.

This "pizza" looks like something that should be in the garbage can --- yuch!!!
