My husband and I have a week in November to spend in Europe. The weather is my concern. We don't mind cold but don't want to be in the rainy season. We were thinking of Spain. Any suggestions? Thanks
Spain, as it sits astride the Atlantic Ocean to the Northwest & Southwest and the Mediterranean to the east about 3 different climates. Your best bet for milder weather is the Med coast with Andalucia being slightly warmer. Madrid in the center of the peninsula is a dry area and receiver 2.5 inches of rain in November which happens to be the wettest month! I like to use http://www.weatherbase.com/ to research temperatures and rainfall etc.
Many Americans forget just how far North Spain is compared to most of America. For you this will mean considerably shorter hours of sunlight in November. You'll probably get some rain but it will probably be occasional rather than steady. Italy and Rome in particular have great weather in November with longer days.
Marilyn, I spent the last week of Nov first week Dec. in Europe last year. Weather was fabulous. Paris and Normandy were sunny and mid 60s then on to Austria & Germany predicgtably colder, but we planned for it.
This year I am heading to Turkey at the end of Nov... reports are mid 60s, but its all a risk... but I would rather be in Europe regardless of the weather. Also a few winter vacations in Cotswolds and it was delightful. Few tourists and the countryside was very beautiful with all the beige tones of the dried hydrangeas...amazing.
Marie, Italy is actually farther North than most of Spain. Get out a map and see. Most of Europe is actually farther North than most of the US. Starting around New England and up into the Canadian latitudes. This does make for longer days in the summer and shorter days in the winter. It is quite easy to check for daylight hours and average weather for any place in the world, using Google.
My experiences of travel in Europe in November have been the following: Sunny, cloudy, rainy, warm, cool, cold, freezing, foggy..........sometimes all in one day! And we have been all over (Holland, Belgium, Prague, Budapest, Italy, Vienna). I was in Spain in February 2005, the weather was freezing but there wasn't a cloud in the sky.
Dress in layers, bring umbrella
Andalusia in Southern Spain, should be comfortable, if not beach weather, in Novemeber. Italy from Rome south, should also be comfortable. As you get further north it can be cool, or possibly cold, in November. We were in Rome in early Novemeber and it was really nice. We had some very light rain (not enough to need an umbrella), days were perfectly comfortable - nights were cool enough for a sweater or light jacket.
Jo in Frankfurt's reply made me laugh until I was snorting (not very ladylike) because of course the remark is 100% true. I mean, I do have a world globe in the library near my laptop. It must be because I'm driven insane by thoughts of the gelato.
