Europe in June (18 - 26) - where would you go?

One week off between school and camp. Two adults and one (then to be) 10 year old boy. We'd like somewhere not teeming with tourists, not too hot, charming city/towns to wander through. Historically significant sites, not too expensive. An itinerary where we can travel by train rather than drive. Looking at Prague - Dresden - Berlin and we need help/feedback!

We went to Germany and Austria this year June 18-30. The crowds were not bad yet and it was not hot. Who knows for June 2009. We did Munich(Fussen) 3 nights, Salzburg/Hallstatt 3 nights, Rothenburg 2 nights and Berlin 3 nights. We only traveled by train. Flight into Munich and out by Berlin. We had a great time and no regrets. Use this site's search engine for the places you are interested in. Sorry I can't help with Prague but the 3 cities you mentioned are close together and easily connected by train.

You asked the same question earlier about Northern Italy. Have you change your plans?

My answer would be a big "it depends."

Have you all been to Europe before? If so, where (and where haven't you been)? Do you like to go back to the same placxes, or always looking to see something new? Budgetary concerns?

Yeah, lots of big open questions here. I can say that Prague will be completely teaming with tourists in the summer.

I'm a little surprised by your choices of Berlin, Prague and Dresden given your goals. Prague will indeed be very full of tourists; Berlin isn't "charming" in the "Old Europe" sense of the word, and none of these are "towns".

I'd be more tempted to look for an area where you don't travel quite so far since your time is limited. The Rhine/Mosel region comes immediately to mind - cities like Trier (ancient Roman stuff) and Cologne have plenty of history, and near them lie some of the best medieval castles for touring - Marksburg and Burg Eltz. The WW II museum in Remagen is very good too. Cobblestoned/half-timbered towns including Bacharach, Bernkastel, Cochem and Linz are close by and not overtouristed in June.

The region is easy to get around too. The three of you can use the regional trains and some buses for less than 30 Euros/day on a Rheinland-Pfalz daypass, which covers almost the whole area (as far north as Bonn; to cologe would require a separate ticket.)
