Really good, thanks Frank II! I like the Berlin ideas and have been to some of them and can only recommend them, too. One addition to the article: The Motel One between Ku-Damm and Zoo station is equally as well located as the one on Alexandersquare... There also is a Lindner on Ku-Damm, just a block from the Motel One, which isn't that much more expensive during non-trade-fare-season but probably offers better service. My recommendation for all cities in Europe: Check rates with HRS.com.
Thank you for this, Frank II. Linking onto the Paris sight, I learned about a concert hall we had never heard of (Salle Pleyel) and have reserved seats for a concert May 11. Very interesting.
It's a great article and I've saved the whole section for future reference.
But note that the "budget" travel is $250 a day. Quite a change from the days of "Europe on $5 a Day".
No, the $250/day is per COUPLE not per person. That is indeed quite reasonable.
I find that the NYTimes does not write travel articles geared to the budget-minded traveller. I love their articles, but when $250/day is the low end of the range (and trust me, they mean per person), I just wonder who their audience is. I've been to some of the places this article mentioned in recent years and had a great time on less than $250/day per COUPLE.
I've read the NYTimes travel section for several years and often they'll talk about how "affordable" a place is - i.e., hotel rooms that start at $350/nt. That's affordable?
Gosh Mike, it sounds like Samantha Brown from the Travel Channel writes the articles! Lol! Samantha Brown says $500 per night is low budget for a hotel!
For me it's more like $500 a week!
I haven't waded through the article yet. NYTimes travel has me on their mail list and sends me weekly "deals" that sometimes make me laugh because they're pretty pricey.
Lisa - We likely stay in the same places. Perhaps we've crossed paths in the cheaply lit hallways of hotels where Samantha would never dare venture.
