If you are doing a cruise which I assume you are, we always do our own shore excursions BUT that requires you to do a LOT of homework by studying the ports, transportation options, guidebooks, etc. Excursions do all work for you and give a general view of what they think you want to see. We think it is best to do it on your own but others want the convenience of prearranged tours.

Yes, it is a cruise that we will be on. I have been told that going from Naples to Sorrento and Amalfi should be easy, but how do I get that info and will I make it back on time. Same for getting from Livorno to Tuscany. I would love to do it on our own but I don't know where to start. If we didn't have a time restriction I wouldn't be as worried.

This why I said you have to do the homework. You start with guidebooks. Most guidebooks have a section on public transit to and from those locations. You get maps. Find where the ships docks. Get transportation bus, train - schedules from the web. Determine you transportation option generally train is best. Schedule your trip around the schedule and ship departure. Plan a little slack. Never take the last train but the one before so you have some back up should something go wrong. Some places are easier to do than others. PS We find the Rick Steves guidebooks a good starting point because they are well oriented to the independent travel which is what you are when you set off the boat.
