Eurocamping

I have read about a British company that leases campgrounds all over Europe and converts them into fully equipped campgrounds where families just need to bring what's on their back and the rest is set up and ready to go...they have sites with beds, stoves, tables and chairs--the works. Has anyone out there actually gone to one of these campgrounds, and if so, what did you think? I have two kids ages 12 and 10 and thought it would be a good way to take a break from hotels and pensions and meet other kids. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Also, how far in advance does a family need to book in the summer months?

Hello julia. What countries in Europe, and in what regions in those countries, do you want to do "camping" in.

We are looking at central Europe mostly--Germany, Austria, Holland; not sure yet...we are in the planning stages and if there is a particular area where there is good camping then we can plan around. We won't have gear, so that was my interest in the concept of "Eurocamping". Any suggestions? Julia

I know there are some in France, but I cannot remember the name of them. One of my friends went there with her 3 kids and they had a blast, but they were quite a bit younger then yours. Had another friend go to a Club Med in Croatia that was sort of camping, and very reasonable, so you might want to check that out. There are all kinds of places, especially in the Netherlands, Denmark, and up north in Germany. This is very popular with families here. Farm vacations are also quite popular, especially when combined with some horseback riding.

Julia, we stayed in our rented motor home just outside Venice. I noticed they had cabins for rent, however I'm not sure what equipment was in the facilities. The campground was close to the airport and had a bus system that drove you into Venice. Possibly you could do a Google search.

If you're at all interested in Switzerland, I know that the Girl Scout's "Our Chalet" (outside Bern) has camping available in 7-person tents (www.ourchalet.ch). There's also the Lido in Luzern, which has "caravans" (campers of varying sizes) available for rent (www.camping-international.ch).

I've been looking in to these, myself! Have fun!!
