You can also go to an online currency converter like xe.com.

You could send a text msg to Google:
address is 46645 (googl on your phone keypad). Msg = 1 usd in euro or 350 euros in usd or ...
In a few seconds you get a text msg reply with the calculation

I happen to prefer oanda.com, but xe might also be good.

Another vote for http://www.oanda.com/ . The home page has a table showing exchange rates for USD, GBP, EUR, and JPY. At the moment is shows that one euro cost $1.3947 and that one dollar is worth €0.7170. On your return home you can check how your credit card, debit card, atm and exchange bureau transactions compared to the interbank rate by checking historical rates at http://www.oanda.com/currency/historical-rates .

It's easier to calulate if you think of the Euro as $1.50, or $3 = 2 Euros. Coming from American that means you end up having actually spent less than your 1 Euro = 1.5 dollars calculations would have predicted, and that's always a nice surprise. The difference is still small enough that as long as you aren't buying a car or a whole weeks rent, 1 Euro = 1.5 dollars is close enough.

I agree with Sam. Round up when you make on-the-go conversions in your head. The euro hovered around $1.38-1.40 while we were over there, and we usually used $1.40 or $1.50 when trying to get an idea of how much something costed. In Hungary, we used 200Ft = $1 and in Czech Republic, we used 20Kc = $1 (even though it was more like 17Kc).

Oanda has an app for iPhone, I used it daily during my recent 2 week stay in Paris.

I have a link to Oanda currency converter on my Firefox homepage. One click, and I am there.
