Eurail passes and Eurail Select

I could swear when I went to Europe in the past (which was about 15 years ago) I bought a Select Pass and was required to pay an extra price to add certain categories for a sleeper car. However, I can't find any reference to this on the Eurail site. Anyone have any information. I would really like a comfort pass for 3 pax in a cabin for long runs like Vienna to Venice or possibly Vienna to Rome. So my question is: Do I have to pay extra for a sleeper car?

Absolutely. Eurail just said they would get you from Point A to Point B. They never said anything about giving you a hotel room on the rails. If you look on the Deutsche Bahn site, they are pretty good at showing what the actual price you will pay for sleeping compartment or a berth in a couchette. You have to select the train, then the type of sleeping accommodations with the prices and a box to check if you are traveling on a pass. The pass usually only knocks about 25 or 30 euros off the price.

Sleeper reservations do always cost more, and paid seat reservations are also required on some types of train. See Rick's sleeper info at http://www.ricksteves.com/travel-tips/transportation/trains/night-trains and seat reservation info on the rail travel page for each country you'll visit. You can book reservations in a train station, or add them to your railpass order at http://ricksteves.raileurope.com/us/rail/point_to_point/triprequest.htm. You can also see a printable reservation price list if you download Rick's Rail Guide at http://www.ricksteves.com/publications/rail-guide-form.
