We are planning on going to spain, italy, and greece and getting a eurail pass. To take the train from spain to italy we have to go through france, though do not get off the train, do we need a four country pass or would a three country pass be acceptable since we are not actually stoping in france?
You will need a four country pass since the train goes through France.
U take a ferry from Italy to Greece and the ferry is part of the eurail pass.
The Eurail website does explain that the countries on a multi-country pass must share at least one common border with another country on the same pass.
So does that mean that Greece and Italy share a border, sort of through the Ionian Sea? Or do the former Yugoslav countries form the border therefore meaning Spain, France, Italy, Greece doesn't work?
I flew from Italy to Spain last year, it was so much easier, cheaper, and less of a hassle. I'd probably go without the train pass, unless you are planning on taking lots of trains in both countries, being Italy and Spain. If you are planning to travel between Madrid and Barcelona on the Ave, then a Italy-Spain pass would be ideal. Either fly, or ferry to Greece as they no longer have train service.
