Eurail Global Flex Pass vs ticket piurchases

My adult daughter and I are traveling across 5 countries, but only on 4 days of our trip.
I’m trying to see where I might be overlooking a seat assignment requirement that would add to our costs.

Here’s what we have so far as tickets go:
We’re booked (refundable) on the European Sleeper train from Amsterdam to Prague. Cost: 560 USD
Prague to Luxembourg: Cost: 110 USD (PLUS ICE train seat reservations; est’d @ 50 USD)
Luxembourg to Annweiler, Germany. Cost: $60 (not sure about seat reservations)
Total cost: 560 plus rez costs: 800 USD

Compare this with the Eurail Global Flex Pass:
European Sleeper train from Amsterdam to Prague. Cost: 2 days of Eurail pass
Prague to Luxembourg. Cost: 1 day of Eurail pass PLUS ICE train seat reservations est’d @ 50 USD
Luxembourg to Annweiler, Germany. Cost: 1 day of Eurail pass (seat rez’s notwithstanding)
Total cost: 4 travel days plus seat rez costs: 649 USD (2nd class) plus rez costs: 725 USD

Am I missing anything in terms of extra costs? Has anyone BEEN on the European sleeper train? The Flex pass seems like a better deal, but it’s likely the overnight Sleeper will charge extra for have a 5-person sleeper to ourselves.
Thank you!

Are you sure that the 'European Sleeper accepts the Eurail Pass? I cannot find anything that indicates that it does. I don't see their logo among the many other railways on the Eurail website.

Generally, when you book a sleeper train on Eurail Pass it only includes the basic transportation. You need to pay the cost of any sleeping accommodations, whether in a couchette or private compartment.

PS, apparently the Eurail pass is valid, but as I said, you must pay extra for the sleeping unit.

I take the night trains on a Flex Pass but do not do the sleeper option, not necessary, don't need it, and far too expensive.

Why do you think Amsterdam to Prague (very good route by night train...thanks) cost 2 days? Not so. Doing night route uses one Pass travel day. By definition night trains are trains dep after 19:00 and arriving after 04:00.

On your Pass you indicate the date of arrival (here in Prague.). On that same day, say you want to do day trip r/t taking 1.5 hrs each way, use the Pass and no extra travel is charged.

Another option Amsterdam to Prague: sit in the general seating area or in 6 seat compartment with 4 other seat mates, tat doesn't bother me at all, most likely they'll be Dutch, German, or Czech. In 2023 I did Hamburg to Vienna, all 6 seats were taken, all were german and lived there, one was ethnic Vietnamese living there too, I was the only foreigner / visitor.

Your Pass gets you on board, no other cost is involved BUT you need to pay for a seat reservation. That is not covered by the Pass. That seat reservation might run from 12-15 Euro 2nd class.

If I were going Prague to Amsterdam, I would choose the night train option (it's direct) and most likely on time, , no sleeper, no couchette, but a reserved seat in the general seating area on a Flex Pass

Hi Sam, they indicate that they do, yes. It is on my ticket confirmation.

Speaking to your comments Fred, that’s good news about the sleeper time spectrum—would love to save an extra day for whatever!

Yes, and if you want a double sleeping compartment it will cost you about $325 with the Eurail Pass for the random date I looked at. That is still less than the $560 you have now. Unless, of course, you wish to follow Fred's advice and sit in a seat for 13 hours.

And Prague to Luxembourg is another 13 hours. BTW, you can buy the seat reservations direct from Deutsche Bahn for about $13 for 2 2nd class seats or $16 for 2 1st class seats.

If you managed to pay 50$ for reservations on Prague - Luxembourg you overpaid massively. What website are you using? In Germany reservations are 6,5 per trip in 1st class.

European sleeper is certainly not free with Eurailpass. Have you checkjed?

Anyway: If you are the person that reserves seats days in advance the pass is not for you. The pass is for people who want to remain flexible and travel spur-of-the-moment.

A 13 hour night ride ...I should have checked but totally no problem. If " they " can do do it , why can't you? You can bet that night train sleeper, should you finally choose that, (I wouldn't) or the general seating area will be packed, ie no lack of passengers all choosing the night train option or even sold out because of its final destination, Prague. Because "they" are doing that, get the seat reservation early unless you want to run the risk of being bumped by someone having already reserved the empty seat occupied by you. Seats in the general seating area do sell out, enough passengers opt for that too.

I did it Prague to Brussels last October. Effortless, dead easy and I'd do it again. Although I'd use the day train and for a random day in May the journey from Amsterdam to Prague with a connection in Berlin is 2113czk or $102 through cd.cz.

"Effortless, dead easy...." How true.

I'm learning , had no idea that Prague was the destination of night trains from Amsterdam and Brussels, very good to know as future travel options.

If you look at the European Sleeper website yes Eurail is certainly accepted- depending on date and destination reservations cost E11 to 21 in Budget Class (seated), 42 to 74 in Classic and 89 to 179 in Sleeper.

And in Classic Class they do have 5 person compartments.

On a random date (15 May) budget class (seats) has a 80 euro supplement for the 5 of you, a Classic 5 person compartment 249 Euro.

You totally have to book the European Sleeper ahead of time, with or without Eurail, as it is very popular.

Without Eurail the 5 person compartment would be 320 Euro.

Yes, 312 euros in addition to having the Eaurail pass. Not such a great deal

Hi,

Be advised too that the sleeper option is the first night train option to sell out as there are indeed so many who go by night train and choose the Sleeper. The last option to sell out is the General Seating area, and it does indeed sell out as I have experience it twice in the last 3 trips, all of which goes to show that night train demand is there, obviously.

Bottom line: It's matter of your travel style, I wouldn't pay the amount for the Sleeper either, that's why I have the Eurail Pass for such night rides paying only for the seat reservation, regardless of it being 8 or 13 hours.
