how long by train from bilbao to bordeaux and which stations to use?
According to the German Rail schedule webpage the stations you want are Bilbao-Abando and Bordeaux-St. Jean and the fastest trip is over 9 hours. BTW, there are no Eurail stations and no Eurail trains, just Spanish Rail (Renfre) and French Rail (SNCF) stations and trains.
I have no personal experience with this route, but here is what I learned from a few Google searches. ALSA has one direct bus from Bilbao to Bordeaux. However, it runs in the middle of the night and not every day. When you check the timetables enter Burdeos, the Spanish name for Bordeaux. Your best daytime route would be to take an ALSA bus from Bilbao to Irun (frequent service), a Basque EskoTren train from Irun to Hendaye (service at 17 and 47 minutes past the hour for the 4-minute ride), and a train from Hendaye to Bordeaux. Use the German Rail timetables for Hendaye-Bordeaux.
Thanks to both of you. In particular, the German site is very easy and filled with pertinent info (maps, yea). We are taking a leisurely 2 month rail trip around Europe and mostly are looking for convenience (carrying luggage) and safety (carrying luggage LOL). We have a 15 day universal Eurail pass.
Hello Christy, This has nothing to do with trains but being that you are going to be in Bilbao check out the Guggenheim Museum, it is wonderful! Also in downtown Bilbao for lunch we had the plate of the day----slices of duck breast drizzled with a raspberry sauce, beats anything in the states. Dontcha' just love Europe!
Oh, yes, the Guggenheim. That is the sole reason we will be in Bilbao after about 5 days in Madrid and 2 in Toledo. Thanks for the dining recommendation. I wasn't sure there was much in Bilbao other than the museum. At least 1/2 of our traveling pleasure is finding great local cuisine.
