ETIAS Visa

Starting in 2021, Americans will have to "register" and pay a small fee to visit Schengen. It is similar to the ESTA system Europeans need to use to visit the U.S..

This article explains it as it pertains to UK citizens but it will be the same for Americans, Aussies and I'm guessing, Canadians.

It's been in the pipeline since at least 2016. Presumably it will happen at some point. Expecting they can get get it operational and working properly by 2021 requires a higher confidence in the EU's efficiency than experience suggests.

As far as North Americans are concerned, it is payback for ESTA and probably not an issue as the trip is longer and needs to be planned longer in advance.

As for UK citizens, another PIA caused by Brexit.
I am waiting for my first entry into Schengen post hard-Brexit when they say, "sorry, you can't come back in because you were already in 90 days". But I live there!

You’ve got a Swiss residence permit, so it does not apply, some people... really.

Jim, that is the problem. The Ausländerausweis issued to EU citizens is only valid in Switzerland. It is not a travel document.
They issue a different Schengen-standard card to non-EU citizens. And this card, together with their passports, allows them entry into other Schengen countries without the 90-day limit applying.

EU citizens are just given a paper document valid in Switzerland only, as their passport already exempts them from the 90-day limit.
So for a UK citizen post-Brexit, A French (or German or Swedish) immigration official has no way of telling I am allowed to enter the Schengen Area, he just sees I have been there over 90 days and want to re-enter.
