Emergency Evacuation Travel Insurance

I know this topic has be on the site prior but I need a quick answer. We have medical insurance coverage in Europe but would like the catostrophic insurance in case of an emergency. I looked at Travelguard but they do not sepatate medical from evacuation and the price is high. Will be leaving for 5 weeks in Europe this Wed. Help!!!

I've never a seen policy that offers evacuation/reparation without medical coverage. Medical is a relatively small liability compared to evacuation which can run into 6-digit figures. So purchasing a combo policy doesn't run the price up that much.

Joining Divers Alert Network (www.diversalertnetwork.com) will give you $100k of med evac insurance automatically. Family membership is $55 a year, and you can apply online. You don't have to be a diver to join, and it covers non-diving-related incidents, as well.

Joanne, You might be able to get short term coverage from MedJet Assist. Send them a note for details and costs. Happy travels!

I've got MedJet. They dont pay medical bills but they do evacuation. My insurance "should" cover the bills if i have receipts. The idea is to get home ASAP so the bills are local (evacuation).

I've used this site several times to figure which travel insurance I want for the best price. You can compare about 8 policies side by side. For example, for the same price, options might have 25,000 medical with one policy and 100K for an alternative. Or $100% for trip interruption vs. 150%. It allows you to filter on what's important vs. what's not. This sight has travelguard as well as many other insurance companies. http://www.squaremouth.com/

Ditto on checking out Medjet Assist. Our medical takes care of those bills overseas, and Medjet will get us home. They have individual and family plans for various lengths of time. And you do not have to be overseas, only 150 miles away from home.

I've purchased basic comprehensive plans from Travelex and Allianz (used to be Access America)...Allianz has better coverage, so I would recommend going with them. The cost is minimal as a % of your trip budget, so it's really not expensive. It covers primary medical, evacuation, and a thousand other things. You can buy a policy right up to your moment of departure, so you still have some time.

This discussion prompted me to review my insurance, and I thought I'd alert other seniors as to what I found. While it's true that Medicare doesn't cover you outside the US, a Medicare supplement, if you have it, may. We have Kaiser Senior Advantage; and as I read it, the policy seems to say that they reimburse for the (necessary) costs incurred outside of their service areas. Nothing about within the US only. I will, of course, double check this before our next trip.

First of all, thanks to all of you for responding so quickly and all the good information. I checked on the comparision of plans and that led me to TravelGuard website. Also checked on medjet but our timing of 35 days didn't give me the best deal. I ended up with Med/Evac plan from Travel Guard that will meet our needs; adds $50,000 in medical; and priced at $227. for two seniors. We are also on medicare but our medical insurance is not a supplement but a full insurance policy (husband's former job). I ended up calling TG directly and bought the plan over the phone. They sent all the information directly and I was able to print everything out including "cards" to carry with us. One hint: if you are looking for this type of insurance at TG online; go the tab "travel options". I kept looking under "international travel" and the only plans offered there were the silver, gold, and platimum plans. For years I didn't take any travel insurance....guess the few times I have fallen on the cobblestons (no injuries) makes me think of being safe rather than sorry. I'm all packed and ready to go tomorrow....here I come Germany, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands!!!! Thanks again.
