Email Notice of Responses to a Posting

Has anyone noticed that since the web site was restructured we no longer receive "do not reply" emails telling us that someone has responded to a posting that is made here. Or is it just me? I posted two questions last week relating to an upcoming trip in September and was surprised that there were no responses, but today while looking at them on the TH it surprised me to learn that there were 6 and 8 very helpful responses to them that I knew nothing about. I have sent an email to rs.com asking about this and if it is a new policy asked them to reverse it. With the sheer volume of postings on this site it is easy for a posting to get lost in the newer ones after a few pages have come and gone.

I thought that was a great feature, too. Wish we could at least have the option to be notified by email.

Unfortunately it seems the email notification is gone. I know some people don't want to be bothered with emails, but it would be nice to have the option. I've noticed that on a number of threads the OP doesn't come back to address any questions asked of them or respond in any way. I think it may have to do with not getting notified that there is activity on their thread.

The couple of times I posted a question under the prior system I didn't get any notice of replies. The TA system where notices are emailed when a reply is made on your post or to a thread you've responded to would be good.

@Tex - prior to the Helpline revamp I always got an email notification when someone replied to one of my threads. I believe it was an option you could make when you registered with the website.

I thought it was just me! I posted something recently and quite by accident found out there had been replies. Too bad you couldn't opt in or out. I'd like to know if someone answers my questions.

Thanks for bringing up the topic Jim. Like Andrea, I thought it was just me. I just came back to the forum recently as I took 2 years off from Europe trip and am now ready to take another one. I really miss the old feature of email notification once a response was made to my question.

Yes, I TOTALLY agree with the other posts above. Why did the powers-to-be change the way we used to receive responses?

Nice to see there is some agreement to my concern. I'm glad I decided to go back a few pages this morning on the TH and check my posting and found your responses. I wrote to the webmaster about it last week and the response was that the email notification went away with the revamping of the site. Apparently they didn't feel it was a valuable resource to us. They said they would look at it in the future, but we all know what that means. Sounds like to me that we need to have more people who like this feature write to [email protected] and complain. Pass the word.

I think the lack of email notification is a HUGE PROBLEM. There are enough 'regular-type' posters who completely forget they've even started a thread; surely this explains the recent surge of newbie posters who start a thread but are never.heard.from.again.

I've actually taken to PMing some the the newer OPs that they've accumulated several responses on their threads. They are ALWAYS surprised to hear it...

(Not to get this thread off-course, but on a related note) I DO, however, really appreciate receiving the full text of any PMs in my notification emails! Of course, I keep trying to reply to the email... ;-)
