Electrical appliances in France, Italy, Spain, and Austria

I am traveling to Europe this summer and will need to charge my US cell phone as well as a camera battery charger while I am there. What do I need to take with me? I am confused between plug adapter and voltage converter.

You need a voltage converter IF you need to convert 220 to 110 volts which you probably don't need. However, you need to check the input label on all of your equipment to see what the volt input is -- If is says 120-240V you are OK to go with a plug adapter only. If it is only 120V then you need a converter. Simple.

You will absolutely need a plug adapter (US flat pin to European round pin) and probably won't need a voltage converter. Take a look at the phone and battery chargers and read what it says for "Input". Most likely it will say 100-240V @ xxA 50/60 Hz. If it does, no converter needed. If not, you could buy a converter or see if an alternative charger with appropriate input voltage is available. The plug adapters are available all over, even places like Office Depot in their little travel section.

A plug adapter is all that I needed in France, Spain, and England. Actually, I carry two so that I can charge the camera and cell phone at the same time. The best is a small that has adapters for multiple countries and areas of the world. Check out the travel supply stores.

Allison, The first thing you'll need to do is check the nameplate label on EACH APPLIANCE (or the Charger) that you'll be travelling with, and look for the Input Voltage ratings. If these state "100-240 VAC, 50/60 Hz", then you'll only need inexpensive Plug Adapters to use these in Europe. I'd suggest taking at least two, as it's wise to carry a "spare". The Plug Adapter for the countries you'll be visiting has two round pins. Have a look at This Website for examples. Another important question you'll need to answer is whether your "US cell phone" will even work in Europe? Which network are you with, and what type of phone are you using? Is it a Smart Phone (such as an iPhone or Blackberry??? Happy travels!
