Economy Vertical Flying Is Here, My Friends

Almost. It's only a matter of time.

SkyRider passengers would lean on a bicycle-seat type cushion that sits higher than your traditional airline seat. Legs sort of hang off the saddle, as they would if you were riding a horse. The seat back sits straight up, forcing good posture. A knee cut-out provides another precious few inches of legroom.

You're neither sitting nor standing — you're sort of leaning.

The seat maker is also pondering an under seat "shelf" where kids and shorter passengers can rest their feet so they're not dangling for the duration of the flight.

From the article:

And here's what you've been waiting for: It's important to note no airline has actually purchased the seats and installed them — Avio Interiors is still looking for its first buyer of the SkyRider, and has been for nearly 10 years. It's also unclear whether the seat would meet government safety standards for emergencies (it has not been certified by the FAA yet either.)

Let’s just hope they never pass FAA certification.

I hope never in my lifetime.
You would think after trying to flog it for 10 years, they would move on...or at least head over to RyanAir headquarters.....

In basic Economy I know I'll sleep better with a slight recline and stay asleep during the 11 hour scheduled flight.

This way is a bit unconventional.

So will the in-flight movie be some John Wayne western, so you can see him astride a horse while you’re straddling your platform? I guess side-saddle won’t be an option, either?

West coast flights to Europe, even non-stop, would be about 12 hours of "economy vertical" and significantly more if it's not non-stop. I can't even imagine that. They better have very low airfares.

. . . and I imagine the lavatories will just have a porcelain platform, with two pods for standing on, and a small hole in the middle? Having no seats would save lots of space, in many ways, maybe . . .

They roll this out annually and it gets predictable attention. I don't think it's been suggested for other than short duration flights and may never happen even then.

If the price was half current prices, I'd sit in a seat like this for a short flight. I'd be interested in what it means for cabin bags/personal items? There's no room under the seat in front of you and no extra overhead storage for twice as many passengers. Forcing people to check bags isn't economical.

Continental, I didn't know. How do you do it? You have to love European travel to make the effort. Same for all our disabled Forum members. My heart is with you all.

Honestly, I adapt. Thanks for asking, Kent. I can't do all that I used to do because I have a spinal condition called spondylolisthesis that limits how much I can stand and the leg room I need when I sit. I sit in the bulkhead aisle seat when I fly both on business and leisure and that makes a real difference. I can fly on regional jets like Embraer 190s if I'm seated in the bulkhead aisle. I bring a cushion that gives me significant support as well. In airports I use wheelchair service and THAT can be hit or miss. I love rail travel. There are times I wake up in pain and have to sit for a bit before I start my day. When I was in London a few months ago, there were times I needed to find the nearest park bench and sit for maybe 30 minutes until the spasm pains went away. I am not on opioids so I don't have to worry about traveling with pain killers that are illegal in many countries.

I do love to travel and it's worth it. My work involves travel and that has been more of an adjustment than my personal travels overseas. If there are flights that involve prop planes for example, I no longer travel to those locales. Somebody goes in my place but that is rare.

Again, thanks for asking. No way I could do the dangling bike seat economy seat. Reminds me of the Carol Burnett No Frills Airline skit! Check it out if you haven't seen this.
