Ebay money

Has anyone purchased euros or pounds through ebay? We are leaving on the 10th of June, and my bank quoted a much higher price for conversion (as well as a hefty fee and postage), so I'd like to purchase some euros and pounds prior to arriving in Europe. I've been told repeatedly not to do the exchange at airports due to the high fees, and I am happy to use my ATM card once I get there, but I'd like to have a few dollars for food and taxi fare.

Before anyone thinks I've gone back on my ATM-only position, the original poster is NOT your regular Nancy from Bloomington, IL! Umm... do we have another "Frank" situation? Of course, being from the same town complicates things, too.

Didn't know there was another Nancy, but regardless, I did ask the question, and if it helps the other Nancy, we can call me Nancy L.

Actually, yes, you did know because awhile back you asked me a question in private messages regarding your upcoming trip and you remarked on us having the same name and town. In order to change it, though, you need to do it on your profile.

Oops, sorry, Nancy. I honestly didn't remember. I don't have 2000+ messages like you, and I'm a fairly new poster.

Didn't mean to tick you off. Too many other things in life for me to care about.

If it helps, I'm the poster with fewer than 10 posts and I only have a U instead of USA after my info.

Actually, I just won an auction off of ebay for euros, so I'm just looking for pounds now. I was informed I can get them through AAA, so I'm good to go.

Thanks!

Just to clarify, I'm not ticked off, just wishing to avoid the confusion. Sometimes people are in too big a rush to post to notice a difference in number of posts, etc. Thanks.

This is kind of a surreal thread. :)

Wow.. My eyes were going crazy here! LOL!!!

Well, Nancy with the "U"....welcome!

I personally would not trust currency purchased on ebay, Craigslist or any sites which are not monitored that closely.

You may think you're getting a good deal, but the money could have been stolen or fake.

For example, did you read the postal carrier from Michigan selling stolen stamps to pay his mortgage?

I use the rule: If its too good to be true.. it prob is.

Now.. I have to remember to count the number of posts Nancy has to distinguish Nancy from Nancy.

PS: I know you don't post often, but if you "could" add an L, that would be helpful.

I'm greatly relieved that we have resolved The Case of the Wrongly Accused Bi-Polar Nancy and can return to the main subject, the almost criminally enjoyable tourist destination that is Wales.

If you are talking about only changing a small amount of dollars the currency exchange at the airport would not be enough to worry about. For example, Travelex is currently quoting $1.50/euro and the official rate is $1.35 which means that 50 euro would be $75 at Travelex and $67.50 + whatever the European ATM fee might be.

The European ATM will not charge a fee. Any fee will be charged by your own bank.

Hi Everyone,

I tried to re-register, but I only have one email address, and it said it was already registered. Any suggestions?

Just to let you know how new I am at this, I JUST realized there were several messages under My Profile. Scary!

Nancy, I apologize for any mix-ups.

We usually don't take any local "starter" currency with us, but we did last year. We got prices from AAA and our bank/credit union. We used our credit union because by the time you added the fees and the exchange from AAA, the cu was more economical.

Your comment about the airport high fees is probably related to the exchange booths, which is true. But if you use an ATM in the airport, you only have whatever your bank charges for the transaction plus whatever the current exchange rate is. Which is much better than paying the AAA fees. Just wait until you get to the airport. If you happen to be on a one or more stop flight with a layover, use an ATM at that airport.

There's no need for an apology - really. We just need to have separate identities. :)

Okay, I'm Nancy L now. Thanks to those who helped me out here (Kent and Michelle).

I like the idea of using the ATM when I get to London and will plan to do just that.

No one really cares about the identity of the poster. It's only the post that helps the traveler asking the question that matters.

First, I love that Neil can put in a plug for Wales on any thread. Second, and I'm reminding myself to do this, make sure you also have a few US dollars on you somewhere for any snacks you'll buy at the airport before you leave and once you get back. I know our flights get back here late afternoon, so by the time we actually get to our car, we'll need to hit a drive-thru for dinner.

Pardon me, Bill, but I care (the original Nancy from Bloomington)! I don't want someone else's statements attributed to me in error. And particularly since this topic is one on which I have posted an opinion previously, I didn't want the new Nancy's question to appear that I was changing my practices.

Nancy "L" in my many visits to London I have never missed the ATM at the airport. You'll do fine.

Happy travels.
