Eating Vegetarian in Switzerland

We are going to Geneva, Switzerland and visiting some of the outlying cities and towns and are vegetarians. Do you know of any good restaurants that may have some variety other than just salads?

Being a vegetarian is quite popular in Europe and therefore most restaurants are going to have vegetarian options over and above just salads.

It is mushroom season right now, so you will find all kinds of menu items with various kinds of mushrooms in them, Pfifferlinge being my favorite, and they will appear in risottos, pastas, or with potato dumplings or spaetzle. Nice cheese dishes like Raclette or fondue are delicious. Veggie platters can also be found or veggie gratins or casseroles, or simply order ala carte from a variety of veggies on the menu - Spinach, leeks, wirsing (sort of a cabbage or kale) green beans, and so on. All kinds of potato dishes too. Rosti which are sort of like little potato pancakes are quite yummy. If you eat eggs, then omelettes and crepes open more menu selections.

If you take dairy products, you shouldn't have any problems. Some of the Swiss national dishes include fondue, raclette, and roesti, all of which can be meat-free in their basic forms.

From my travels in Switzerland I found the country to be "veggie friendly". You can get just vegetables in many restaurants.

I'm not sure how far from Geneva you're going, but Zurich has a vegetarian/vegan friendly restaurant called Hiltl which has been in business since 1898 and I think is still run by the same family. Look here: http://www.hiltl.ch/en/index.php. This is a very nice place located a couple of blocks off of bahnhofstrasse in central Zurich. They also have a restaurant/take out/sandwich place located in the bahnhof in Bern. I don't know if there are others. We have had no trouble finding Vegetarian restaurants in the major cities, but Vegan is harder although not impossible. As others noted, many non-vegetarian restaurants will accommodate you although the selection is sometimes limited.
