eating Vegetarian

We are traveling to England, France, and Italy this summer and I am a vegetarian who is wondering where to eat and what options are available. I do eat fish and dairy. Thanks for your help!

During the last 10 years I have found England has improved tremendously in their vegetarian selections. Of course, as you eat fish, there is always the fish and chips option. However, I love all the Indian restaurants as there are many vegetarian options in each. In France there are wonderful cheeses, produce, and breads, but sometimes it is difficult to find a vegetarian option for the main meal, particularly the closer to Germany I got. Italy is a breeze. Enjoy!

As a former vegetarian, I found the options for dining in the US a lot more difficult than eating in various countries over here. There is usually fresh, seasonal produce on the menus and to be honest being a vegetarian here is very popular. Restaurants always have an option to cater to this.

I can't speak for Italy, but England and France have tons of ethnic places where you can dine too. Asian, Middle Eastern, Indian, etc. all offering good choices.

I doubt you will have any problem at all.

My wife follows the same dietary guidelines as does you, and she rarely had an issue. With all of the options mentioned, plus Pasta, Salads, Pizza... you will get plenty of variety and even a good taste of a region, even without the meat.

Most places will help you out if you point out that you are "Vegetarian", in most languages, the word is even close enough to be clear what your preference is.

Really the only out of the ordinary that occurred on one trip is we did not see much on the menu (in Germany) and we tried to communicate that my wife was a Vegetarian. The owner lit up and took off for the kitchen and proudly brought out our meal. My Schnitzel and assorted meat eater stuff, and a large platter of pan fried cauliflower for my wife. It was very good, but not really the meal she had hoped. I still make it for her once and a while...getting one of those "looks" every time.

You should have no problem eating well and eating regional cuisine. Most menus may have a vegetarian section. But what is funny is when you look at the vegetarian section on a menu in countries like Germany and Austria. Fried cheese, fried mushrooms, fried vegetables, fried fried fried. Delicious, yes, hard on digestive system, yes. Our big joke was that vegetarians in Europe must be fat with heart disease! But definitely check out happycow.com.
