Easy Travel from Zurich to Rome in 10 days

My fiancé and I are traveling with his father on a dream trip he had to Switzerland and Italy! We don’t have a lot lined up yet and the trip is in October but the general plan is that we will arrive in Zurich in mid October and spend the last 3 days in Rome.

We know we want to take the Bernina Express from Zurich down to Italy, that we know we would like to spend time in Lake Como/Lake Garda, and we would like to go along the coast (through Cinque Terre) on our way to Rome but a lot of the details are foggy, and we could use a little bit of help!

Any recommendations on routes, places to stay and views we cannot miss along the route would be greatly appreciated!

Do your 10 days include your arrival and departure days? If so, you really only have 8 days to work with.

I wouldn’t go to Switzerland without stopping for several nights in the Berner Oberland (BO) region. You could take the train from Zurich to Lauterbrunnen, then stay up in the alps in Wengen or Murren. Weather is a big factor, so spending multiple nights gives you better odds of seeing the most spectacular sights in better conditions.

Cinque Terre is not easy to get to and will take up a lot of time between Lake Como and Rome. I would skip it.

This is what I would do:

Day 1: arrive Zurich, train to Lauterbrunnen. Train to Wengen or cable car/train to Murren.
Day 2: BO region
Day 3: BO region
Day 4: BO to Varenna via Bernina Express. This will be a very long day, if it is even doable in one day. You might need to stay a night in Chur to catch the morning train.
Day 5: Varenna
Day 7: Varenna to Rome (6+ hrs)
Day 8: Rome
Day 9: Rome
Day 10: fly home

See how fast the days get used up? No time for CT. Barely time for Lake Como.

The Bernina Express starts in Chur and goes to Tirano. From Tirano, you can easily continue on to Varenna on Lake Como.
