Eastern Europe Travel - do we need a portable Wifi router?

Hi, we are tourists from Singapore and will be travelling to Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic, Austria, Germany and Switzerland for about a month, and we will be doing quite a few hiking trips out of the city. We were wondering if it's easy to find free Wifi in the city or should we rent a portable Wifi router? We are just worried we would need data to search for directions or use Google maps to orientate us in case we get lost. Would anyone have any suggestions as to a cheap portable Wifi rental? Thanks!

Wi-Fi is easy to find in cities and towns at most hotels, coffee shops, some train stations, and some city-provided free spots in all these countries. Rural hiking, however, sounds like a no Wi-Fi zone.
