Hi,

It depends on how you will travel, will it be by train or will you rent a car?
By train, Vienna is about 2 or 2.5 hours from Budapest and about 4.5 hours from Prague (if my memory serves me right). As for Hallstatt, I am not familiar.

If your flight is not already booked, you might look at the possibility of arriving either in Prague or Budapest, and leaving from the other city, since Vienna and Hallstatt are located between them. Otherwise, you will have to travel between Prague and Budapest (or the other way around). By train you’ll probably have to plan a full day of travelling, but you can also check for cheap flights between those two cities.

If your flight is a roundtrip to and from Vienna, you may consider visiting Hallstatt, Prague and then Budapest. The train ride from Budapest to Vienna is shorter and may give you more flexibility to get back to Vienna. If you go back to Vienna the day before your return flight home, or the same day, at the end of your trip, a 2 hours train ride may be less tiring then a 4.5 hours one (but just my opinion).
Regarding Hallstatt, I don’t know what are the possibilities for trains to Prague from there. You might consider renting a car to get from Vienna to Hallstatt and then to Prague.

I wish you a nice trip!

It would be easier, you would have less ground travel time and I doubt it would cost any more if you would fly into Prague and out of Budapest. But using in and out of Vienna, this is possible:

Saturday, 22 April, leave US
23 April, Arrive Vienna
24 April, Vienna
25 April, Vienna
25 April, Train Budapest (about 3 hours)
26 April, Budapest
27 April, Budapest
28 April, Budapest
Saturday, 29 April, Morning Train to Salzburg (about 5 hours) then figure out how to get to Hallstatt
30 April, Hallstatt
1 May, Hallstatt Cesky Krumlov by Bean or CK Shuttle (about 3 hours)
2 May, Cesky Krumlov to Prague by Bean or CK Shuttle (about 3 hours)
3 May, Prague
4 May, Prague
5 May, Prague to Vienna by Train (about 4 Hours)
6 May, Vienna
Sunday, 7 May, Fly Home

Hi

I will be flying in and out of Vienna, already booked my tickets. I have no plans to drive car when i am there. My transportation will be mainly by train to move around.

Which of the following will be more time saving and lower cost?

1) Vienna--> budapest --> prague --> hallstatt --> vienna
2) vienna --> prague --> budapest --> hallstatt --> vienna
3) Vienna--> hallstatt --> prague --> budapest --> vienna

Thanks!!

Use rome2rio.com for each leg of your journey. It will show you the approximate times for each option with links to the various modes of transportation (bus, train, plane) where you can check out schedules and prices for the dates you are planning. With all respect, you need to invest the time and do the work yourself or go to a travel agent. We're just volunteers who love to help each other out.

@ hsh...Based on your three choices listed, I would pick # 1, doing Budapest to Prague by EN night train, if you want an extra day. Depending on the time limit, are you willing to drop Hallstatt? I would. The way to travel with your itinerary is by train. With some detailed planning, all very doable and easy by train. I've been all three cities within the last two years, all by train. The rental car is not an option.

Vienna--> budapest --> prague --> hallstatt --> Vienna

  1. Depart US

  2. Arrive Vienna

  3. Vienna

  4. Vienna

  5. Morning train to Budapest (2.5 hours, 19euro)

  6. Budapest

  7. Budapest

  8. Budapest

  9. Morning flight to Prague on Czech Air ($115.00). It’s an 1:25 trip. Figure 2 hours prior and 1 hour after the flight for total transit time of 4:30 more or less. Taxi or shuttle at each end will cost another $30 per person based on two traveling. You would be at your next hotel about noon.

You could take the train for about $45 plus maybe $10 each for transit tickets at each end of the route. Or $20 if you want to take a taxi due to luggage. The train is 6:45 plus about 1:30 in transit and arrival time. So 7:15 total. You would be in your next hotel about 5pm.

UNLESS you take the night train like Fred suggests. Not sure of the cost of a sleeper. $75 wouldn’t surprise me. You will be at your next hotel 4 hours before check-in time.

10 Prague

11 Prague

12 Prague

13 Morning train, Prague to Salzburg to Hallstatt. It’s a mere 6:45 train ride with one change in Linz, but don’t worry. You will have 14 minutes to make the change. You will be at your next hotel about 5:30pm (unless you miss that 14 minute connection – seriously, I bet there are better connections or a night train). About $65.

14 Hallstatt

15 Hallstatt

16 Morning train, Hallstatt to Vienna (about 3:30 direct)

17 Vienna

18 Return home. OOOOPS, missed the two week window.
