Early or Late August better for European travel?

Hello, I am only free to travel to Europe between July 28 and Sept 4 (traveling to Amalfi Coast, Sicily, Loire Valley, Croatia for about 3 weeks). Do you recommend going in the beginning of August (e.g. July 28 to Aug 14) or end of August (e.g. Aug 18 to Sept 4)? Is there a difference? I know it's going to be hot and crowded but wondering if there's a difference. Thanks!

Late. A lot of Europeans come back from vacation in mid-August, and a lot of Americans don't travel late August because their kids are starting school.

Another vote for late. Weve found price drops in Italy starting August 25 or 26 as the kids head back to school. Things were noticably less crowded.

A fourth vote for late. Many countries in Europe start the academic year mid August.

Renee, I'd also suggest travelling in late August and into September (fall shoulder season). While it could still be "busy", the main August holiday period will be winding down.

We went to Spain the last two weeks of August. Especially towards the end of August, the crowds were very minimal. We also went to London and Paris the first week and a half of September and crowds were extremely light. Most people with kids are back to school and the "shoulder season" crowds haven't started yet.
