Early December European Adventure

My husband and I are in the preliminary stages of planning a trip to Europe December 10-17, 2016 to celebrate my 50th birthday.

We are looking for the perfect place to visit at that time of year.

We have visited Europe a few times and would love to see more. We love to ski and hike, but neither of those are particularly good options in mid-December. We also enjoy museums, wine, art, spectacular restaurants and music. We enjoy warmer climates, but for this particular trip, we are thinking more Christmassy than beachy.

What is the perfect pre-Christmas European destination?

We loved Prague pre Christmas last year. Old Town Square decorated serving mulled wine and tryblinka and a giant tree. Lots of concerts available very festive.

As mentioned above - alot kind of depends on where you've already been. My wife and I have made Christmas visits to Europe the past few years. Last year we visited Prague->Vienna->Budapest. If you're up for two cities, I'd highly recommend Prague and Budapest. And while Paris is somewhat lacking in the 'Christmas Market' feel (basically random vendors lining the Champs de Elysees) - Paris is still lovely to visit at this time of year. We spent a week in Paris with an overnight day trip via train to Bruges - which is a city filled with the Christmas markets and one of the more beautiful/charming towns we've seen. We've also done a Paris/Amsterdam Christmas trip and while I loved Amsterdam - if you're looking for the 'Christmas feel' - it seems to be a bit lesser there. Full disclosure - we've never been to Germany during Christmas season - so I don't have any firsthand knowledge of there.

As for museums - Paris obviously has the lead with the D'Orsay, Louvre, Rodin Museum, the Pompidou. Even walking through Pere Lachaise Cemetery can feel museum-esque. Amsterdam has the Van Gogh and Riksmuseum and the Anne Frank House.

Obviously there are many great restaurants in Paris. One of our favorites - especially in the winter - is Le Coupe Chou. But all of these cities really have wonderful local places to enjoy a great dinner with great wine selections.

Wherever you choose - i hope its a great trip for you!

Well, since Paris is my favorite city (and very romantic), how about combining that with 3-4 days in Alsace which is simply magical at that time of year. Take a look at this website. Take the TGV train to Strasbourg or Colmar.
