My husband and I are traveling to Amsterdam and Germany the first two weeks of April - can anyone advise regarding the average temps for that period? Will a lightweight water resistant jacket be sufficient or should be pack something a little heavier? Thanks so much!
hi, i was in AMS last year in late March and traveling all around that part of europe. Believe it or not,i got really lucky and almost every day (1 month of travel) i had sunny or no rain days not that it would bother me since it would make me feel like home. sorry i dont remember the temps. Its a coastal town and feels and smells like one. Amsterdam was warm and sunny when i was there. I was able to take off my jacket during the days. Nights were cooler. AMs were cool too. if you can remembr to "layer" your clothes. just to even things out i went back to AMS last late October. It rained 3 of the 4 days i was there. one day it was drizzly and one it poured. I didnt have a rain jacket, but i discovered that my "moisture wicking" shirt sure does work!
Expect highs in the mid-teens celcius. Could possibly even break 20. You will almost certainly encounter rain, but it usually falls lightly. I should point out whereas last year spring arrived early and we had several weeks of sunny weather, this year winter has continued to linger. We had one of our coldest nights of the year just three days ago. It should warm up by the time you arrive, but it might be proportionally colder than compared to last year. Or not...
We arrived in Amsterdam on 4th April last year. It was very cold, with a biting cold wind. We had one clear day in our 3 day stay. I needed something warmer than a lightweight jacket, but then again I live in a very hot Mediterranean climate.
For me, the problem in Amsterdam in April was not the temperature, but the high humidity. It was about 50 degrees, but I FROZE until I learned that I had to wear a cotton sweater in addition to my jacket with its liner, EVERY time I went outside. I had only brought one cotton sweater, and wore it for 10 days straight. I had also brought a cashmere sweater, but since it was not really cold, I was much too hot in it. Part of what you will need to wear is what weather you're used to. So, coming from Georgia, a light jacket alone will not be sufficient. For me, the higher humidity in England and Holland (compared with NYC) is difficult to dress for; for those from places like the Pacific Northwest, they're used to it.
THANK YOU all
so much for the good info, tips and advise on our trip next month. I appreciate your time and assistance and will pack accordingly!
Well, it is snowing here in Germany right now, and we have gotten about 3" just this morning. A bit unusual for middle of March, but the sun could come out next week and we could all walk around with-out jackets. Check the forecasts before you leave for the airport, and if you don't have a warm enough jacket or sweatshirt, you can always buy one here.
My husband and I did a rail a trip last year from mid April to mid May. We started and ended our trip in Amsterdam. I FROZE the entire time! I'm originally from Massachusetts and can handle colder weather but it was damp and windy the entire time. We also experienced the same weather in Brugge, Germany and Prague. We are actually doing a similar trip this year (Leaving a month from today!) and I plan to pack my North Face fleece for those colder locations. We only brought light sweatshirts with us last year and ended up buying coats at a sporting goods store in Munich.
It's now safe to predict it will remain rather cold, there will be occasional rain but also some sun, especially along the coast. Speaking of which expect some heavy winds as well. Up until today the Northern half of Germany is covered in snow.
Spring weather in Europe: expect and prepare for anything.(eg: snow in the South of France in May two or three years ago)
