Recently, I have been using the eagle creek undercover hidden pocket moneybelt. It rides very comfortably under my pants, attatched to my belt, and is much easier to access if needed. I love it! Do any of you more experienced travelers use it? any opinions on it vs. traditional moneybelts?
My husband really prefers his hidden pocket rather than a waist or neck moneybelt but a belt attachment wouldn't work for me since I don't wear a belt!
The only problem I've found with them is the length. Passports and credit cards are fine, but rail tickets/passes don't quite fit. Darcy, they come with a pin if you don't wear a belt.
i bought one as well but ended up using the RS-money belt i got with my trip. Used it a few trips now. If you always wear a belt (and maybe one with the zipper inside for that true-money-belt hidden 50-Euro note - it works fine for short items. Rail Pass would neet to be folded neatly - or else use the long one. I thould of getting 2 and having my tailor sew them onto the inside of the pants but havent yet. (some of my high-end alpine adventure pants from europe have such a pocket built into the inside - about the same size so i thought it might be nice to have it on my other travel pants. seems simple enough!!
I discovered the hidden pocket when I was a tour director 15 years ago. It's still my main moneybelt. I find it to be the most comfortable. So comfortable, I keep checking to make sure it's there.
I like toms idea of having a hidden pocket sewed to the inside of travel pants (maybe even secure but removable?). I currently wear Tilley adventure cloth pants and really use the secret pocket alot (for cash and credit/debit cards). I purchase artwork from markets (and my wife likes to buy all kinds of stuff) so I carry cash, sometimes +/-$800 or so. I like to negotiate a cash price and also need it fairly accessable. I also carry a dummy wallet with those fake and worthless plastic credit cards that come with offers in the mail, along with a small amount of cash. If I were to get mugged (I never have had any problems) I hope that the theives would see the plastic, assume that they have the "good" and not try to get me to produce anything more. I feel very comfortable with my system -also I go to great lengths to transfer cash discreetly and always pay out of the "dummy". I'm never paranoid but I don't underestimate theives.
I have a collection of moneybelts and neck pouches acquired over the years. I couldn't tell you what brands they are (even though I have a favorite). When we go on trips, everyone picks one.
I prefer the money belt because my small digital camera is on a thin neck strap and tucked in my shirt or jacket. The features I like,
Multiple pockets to help stay organized. It also reduces the risk of pulling something out without noticing and losing it (i.e. pulling out your train ticket and some bills come with it).
I also like plastic lined money belts or keeping my paper in small ziplock bags. I walk/hike a lot and it's not fun to pull a sweaty train ticket (or anything else) out of your money belt.
I agree with others about the plastci lined and/or use a ziplock cut to size for the waist under-cover belts like RS sells. I also try to organize the important reduced-sized copies of docs in a small envelope and also put my cash in a thin-check-book cover/folder so that you dont have everything all mixed up. After the first day - you dont notice its there!
