I hate to be the voice of negativity but has anyone ever actually gotten any out of Brugges? Mine never made to the border!

Yes, it can be done. We bought oodles, set aside an unhealthy pile to consume in the short term, boxed up the rest carefully and took it to the post office right there on Market Square. Shipped 'em home to the USofA. When we got back from our trip they were waiting for us at the post office along with all the bills and junk mail. We tore into them and tried to be disciplined. They lasted several weeks. But it does require a lot of self-control.

Most of the smaller chocolatiers don't do any business in the US because they don't want to pay for the necessary FDA inspections. So your only option is either to pick some up personally, or have someone else ship you some. Probably the best Belgian chocolate available in the US (but not the best in Belgium, in my opinion) is Leonidas.

It's worth a trip -- take her to Dumon's so she can experience it for herself!

With all of the cream and no preservatives I thought that the shelf life was pretty short.

I was told by the people at Dumon and Leonidas that the chocolates should be consumed before a week because it is made with real cream.

You have to check with the staff at the shop itself. Not all Belgian chocolates are made with cream. Those that are should be eaten within a week or so. Those that aren't have a much longer shelf life.

Leonidas isn't even the best Belgian chocolate you can get in the US. Neuhaus ships to the USA and Pierre Marcolini has a store in NYC.

Hey, if you've all got week-old Dumon chocolates sitting around and you're worried about consuming them, just them them to me and I'll dispose of 'em.

That's too bad they don't ship anymore. It was about seven years ago we had some shipped and used them as Christmas gifts.

If you have trouble procuring Dumon chocolate, I'll recommend an alternative. Try Chocolaterie Stam from Amsterdam (shops across Holland and Des Moines, Iowa). I've enjoyed fine chocolate in many places in Europe, and this place is among the best IMHO.
