I will be in Germany near Frankfurt for few days before departing to London. I will have a rental car and the plan is to drop it in Hahn Airport, as confirmed with the rental company. I am flying at 6am from Hahn to London, therefore I decided to drive the day before, and stay in a BB in Hahn. In my way to Hahn I would love to stop to see the Neuschwanstein Castle but I am not sure how far is one from the other one. My question is this castle located near Hahn route, or do I have to take a completly different route to get to the castle before driving to Hahn?
Frankfurt am Main and Hahn are a less than two hours apart by car. Fuessen, where Neuschwanstein is, is a long ways from both of them.
According to ViaMichelin, Frankfurt to Neuschwanstein is 428 km and takes 3h52m. The route from Neuschwanstein to Hahn is 480 km and takes 4h25m. The trip back from Neuschwanstein to Hahn almost goes through Frankfurt.
Roughly on the route between Frankfurt and Hahn would be the Rheinfels castle ruin at St. Goar or the preserved castle Burg Eltz near Moselkern.
Maybe settle for a castle on the Rhine or Mosel. Cochem is not real far from Hahn.
You asked if Neuschwanstein is "on the way" from Frankfurt to Hahn. I just acouple of minutes spent with this map
you'll see why the others are giving the advice they are: that Neuschwanstein is nowhere near being on the way from Frankfurt to Hahn. It's actually in a different region of Germany.
Considering your lack of knowledge of German geography, do you think you can even find your way to Hahn? Perhaps you should consider the bus from Frankfurt Hbf to Hahn. It's only €12 compared to over €13 for fuel alone for a compact car according to ViaMichelin.
Of course, then, you would need local transportation in Hahn between the airport and your B&B. Are you going to be dropping the car off at the rental agency at 4 AM in the morning? Or do you have to return it the day before? If the latter, you would have the same situation with local transportation as you would with the bus.
Your are right, I don't have much knowledge about Germany as this if my first visit. I am at the total mercy of the GARMIN company :). I will then change plans and visit the other castle.
Thank you all.
I guess it's Garmin that protects fools, children, and drunks.
If you can find Jo on this website, she can also tell you about castles in the Frankfurt area.
Cochem castle has a lot in common with Neuschwanstein in that neither is an authentic castle. They were both built in the 1800s, over the ruins of an older castle, as an apartment (chateau).
Another place, which to me is the most interesting, as it has been preserved as an example of a real defensive castle, not a residence, is the Marksburg, in Braubach (www.marksburg.de).
