We plan to allow most of a day to drive from Amsterdam to Bruges. What would be a good route to follow to see the most of the Netherlands/Belgium along the way? We plan to leave Amsterdam 9:00am-ish and arrive in Bruges no later than, say, 5:00 pm. Thanks for any helpful ideas.
You have two options on the highways. One takes you south by Haarlem, Delft, Den Hague, through Rotterdam, Bergen op Zoom to Antwerp. The other goes by Utrecht and Breda to Antwerp. The first option usually has much heavier traffic (some of the heaviest on the continent, actually). From Antwerp, you could either swing southwest around Ghent, then head northwest to Bruges, or straight from Antwerp to Bruges along secondary roads. Although I love both countries, I have to admit... unlike Germany, the views from the highways in the Netherlands and Belgium (minus the Ardennes) are usually not too interesting.
