We are driving from Lauterbrunnen Switzerland to Stuttgart Germany in July and wanted to know the best route. We looking at taking the long way and driving along the French boarder (talking our time and maybe staying overnight in France) or going through Switzerland/ Southern Germany and seeing more of those regions. We are not interested in big cities. Looking for more of the local, quaint experience. Suggestions?
Going the France way, you could catch a couple of the many small wine villages in southern Alsace - Riquewihr, Eguisheim, Kaysersberg, Ribeauville. The centre of Colmar is pretty, a town of about 70,000 (too big?).
For Switzerland near the Bodensee , check out Stein am Rhein and Schaffhausen, on the German side the peaceful Insel Reichenau and the wonderful Insel Mainau.
What do you mean by "best" - fastest, shortest, or "goes through France"? The shortest or fastest routes go through the Schwäbisch Jura, passing near Schaffhausen, Villingen, Rottweil, and Tübingen. It would be a much longer route going through the French Alsace.

I agree with Lee but think his emphasis a little strong - triple. But I do agree that there is a lot to be said for a little more input from the Original Poster about what "Best" is to her.
There are beautiful half timbered wine villages on both sides of the Rhine, in France and Germany. Blindfolded and spun around I would have a hard time telling them apart other than the language. So heading north on the German route will yield similar experiences with much less driving.
