Driving from Porto to Lake Como

We're traveling from Porto (July 6th) to Milan (July 18th). I will be working in the afternoons and evenings, so we're looking for towns where we can base ourselves for ~4 days at a time that are memorable in their own right, but also close to other sites to explore in the mornings and during the weekend. Second, we will have around 11 days in northern Italy and would welcome suggestions for how to spend our time there as well. I have been to the Bilbao/San Sebastian, southern France, and Milan and Lake Como before, but not since 2007.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Be aware that working, end remote working is not compatible with your tourist status in the Schengen Area [Unless you hold an EEA passort] and if detected by immigration you can be refused entry. So be very careful how you present yourself.

You are thinking of picking up a rental car in Portugal and dropping it in Italy? Have you seen what the drop off fee for such a trip would be? You might consider renting only within a country when you need one, but using a train or bus to transit into the next country.
