Hello, we are interested in driving from Nice to Portofino. Which car rental should we go through if we pick up in France but drop off in Italy? Is this even allowed if you are an American citizen? Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks!

Just fyi, a car rental dropped off in a different country from where it was rented will probably cost about $1000.00 over and above the rental cost, if the rental company even allowed it. Being an American isn't relevant to this. Your best bet is to rent after you enter Italy. Trains from Nice to Italy would be my choice, then car rental.

There are a few car rental offices in Sanremo (reached by train from Nice with a connection in Ventimiglia), or at Genova Brignole station much further from the border, or Europcar in Rapallo next to Portofino.
