Driving from Garmisch to Stuttgart to Rothenburg ob der tauber

Hello,

I am travelling to Germany in April. Will be staying in Garmisch for 3 nights. From there the original plan was to drive to Rothenburg ans stay there for one night and next day head to Munich.
So of my friends are insisting to visit Mercedez Mueseum in Stuttgart.
Is it possible to start early and drive to Stuttgart and see the museum and then head to Rothenburg ? I know it sounds insane
Each journey is about 3 hours.

Rima.

Viamichelin says 3 1/2 hours to Stuttgart, then 2 hours to Rothenburg. Traffic will have a big impact on this. Germans have a 4-letter word for it, stau, traffic jam.

Its not insane, but then you will arrive in Rothenburg in the early evening, then turn around and leave for Munich early afternoon the next day. A long detour for a short amount of time.

Do you plan to visit any of the BMW site while in Munich or do they really prefer Mercedes to BMW?

My husband (the car guy) much preferred the Mercedes Museum to the BMW-Welt. I've only done Mercedes and Porsche, and Mercedes is a world-class museum, possibly the best car museum in the world.

Do you have to go to RodT? Would you consider staying in a different quaint city with an intact historical core? Esslingen was, like Rothenburg, a Free Imperial City of the Holy Roman Empire. It was the most important city during the middle ages between Ulm and Strasbourg. Unlike Rothenburg, it's historic core was not seriously damaged during WWII, and unlike Rothenburg it is still a real working city, which means yes, it's not perfectly preserved in amber, you also won't be dealing with throngs of tourist buses, just a real slice of life in Germany.

Another nearby option would be Tubingen, home to Germany's 2nd oldest University that still gives the old city a youthful vibe today. It's very close to Hohenzollern Castle which is well-worth a visit. Tubingen has a castle of it's own. Some people say Rothenburg is a must-see, but with all the beautiful historic cities in Germany, I disagree, and think it only makes sense if it's on the way between two other locations or if you're doing the Romantic Road specifically.

What Sarah said. Going out of your way to visit Rothenburg makes no sense when beautiful medieval towns are closer to your route and you are short on time.

Agree that the Mercedes museum in Stuttgart is much better than the BMW one in Munich.
