I would like to ask someone who has driven in France if they think it is OK for us to drive from Paris to Lourdes and Lourdes to Cannes in early January. Thank you very much!i
If you mean this year, there's no snow right now at all. Fog and short daylight hours would be your biggest hazards. Personally, if it's possible, I would probably rather take a train along your proposed route.
Hi Armelle. That shouldn't be any problem, other than those are long drives; allow plenty of time. Enjoy your trip!
That's a total of about 1600 km, or about 1000 miles. Is it OK for you to drive from Round Lake to Denver, similar in distance, amounts of freeways, and possibility of weather difficulties? If you'd be happy to drive to Denver in early January, you will understand about long drives, snow on the highways, actions you may need to take when the snow arrives, and precautions you need to make with the car. What you won't have driving to Denver are the very high French Autoroute tolls, and the very high price of fuel. It now costs me, in the UK, about £80 or $125US to fill my tank with diesel, for which I get about 400-500 miles. Prices in France vary from place to place, on the Autoroute or off, and from time-to-time, but they won't be much off that. You may not be familiar with the 130kph limits (about 81 mph), or you may. So, that's my answer.
I would like to thank all of you for your prompt response to my question. We have decided to make the drive instead of taking the train because of the scheduling difficulties from Lourdes to Nice. It seems the only option is to leave Lourdes at 6:00 AM arriving Nice ay 6:00 PM. I trust that our Lady of Lourdes will protect us. We will ditch the car in Nice and continue to Italy by train.
Happy New Year!!
