I will be driving from London into Northern France this July.
Is it better to pay for fare ahead or on arrival?
What can I expect during the crossing?
Do we just stay in the vehicle?
Can anyone share their experiences?

Sorry, it is my plan to take the Eurotunnel.
cheaper ahead.
people to walk past the car going to the toilet and back. Otherwise look at the walls, the car ahead (if any), or read a book, sleep, etc.
yes, unless you want a toilet
It is very simple. After check in, any wait required in the waiting building, passport checks English and French, security inspection, possible further examination and/or sniffer dogs, queue up and drive on. When you reach your stop switch off, handbrake on, first gear, windows part way down. Sit. When you get to the other side when the doors open switch on and drive off.
You will not be able to just turn up and get on the train, as it will probably be full in July. Book as far ahead as possible. It's a short but boring crossing with a rather strange rocking motion and as you can't see anything out of the windows, you can feel a bit queasy.
Summer time usually means that the French go on strike, so be prepared!
