dress for three star restaurant in France

Will be on a road trip in french wine country in Sept., living out of a suitcase for two weeks. Have a chance to have dinner at a mich. 3 star (Aubege de l'ille), but not sure of the appropriate dress. My travel partner doesn't want to go dressier than smart casual and would rather eat somehwere else if formal dress is a requirement. Dress codes have gotten slack here, but not in Italy. Not sure how things are in France.

Check to see if the restaurant has an enforcable dress code. If not, you could probably get away with smart casual, although a shirt, tie and dress pants would be better.

Most important, though. Enjoy the meal!

Men wore jackets and ties at the 2 and 3 star places I've eaten in in Paris. It might be less formal in the countryside but I wouldn't chance it unless you get some solid information that tells you otherwise. This would probably be a better question on a food/restaurant board--I'd ask on the France forum at Chowhound.com. Or, try searching for message board posts/blog reviews/etc for that particular restaurant and see if you can glean anything.

I agree with Christy that you'll get better advice asking this question on a forum that has repliers/helpers who actually have eaten at a French 3-star restaurant that is not in Paris (the 3-star Paris dress code may not be applicable to Illhaeusern).

Here you're likely to just get guesses.

I'm aware of only a few travelers regularly on this forum who have actually eaten at a genuine 3-star restaurant in France that is in the country and not in Paris (there are less than 30 3-stars in the entire country, including Paris); and those travelers don't seem to read this forum that often these days.

I've heard that Tripadvisor and Fodors have discussion forums with destination experts who live in France.

One more idea: I assume you're staying in the area for the night. Email your hotel and ask them. Having a 3 star in the area is a very big deal and I bet they know all about it!

Thanks for the advice. Will check the other forums.
