Let me start out by saying I know very little about photography especially digital cameras. I also never carry a netbook, notebook or desktop computer. I need to get a digital camera. Since it has its limits on how many pictures it will hold, I realize I have to download the photos somehow. One thought was to bring extra SD cards. Another is to utilize my ipod touch as a storage device....Does anyone know how I can download photos directly from a digital camera to my Ipod Touch? And, how many MB's in the average photo? (I told you I know nothing about this.)
Frank II, AFAIK it's NOT possible to transfer photos directly from a Camera to an IPod Touch without a computer. However, to be sure I did check some of the Forums and confirmed my suspicions. Typically on a MAC, photos are loaded via IPhoto, which is the method I use, but not sure how this is handled on a PC? It's difficult to answer the question of "how many MB's in the average photo" as that will vary with the Camera and also by the user setting for "quality". Using a typical newer 10 megapixel P&S Camera (Canon SD4500IS) with the highest quality setting, EACH "fine" JPEG image will be just over 2.5 MB, allowing about 1470 images on a 4 GB memory card or just over 6,000 images on a 16 GB card (according to the spec's). For those travelling with digital Cameras, there are several options: (1.) Carry sufficient memory cards to last for the entire trip. Memory is relatively cheap at the moment, so this is a realistic option. I normally store "full" memory cards in my Money Belt, so less possibility these could be stolen from the Hotel room. There's always the possibility that a card could become "corrupted", but I haven't found that to be a problem so far. (2.) Use a Netbook or Laptop to back these up. (3.) Use a dedicated storage device/Portable hard drive such as those from Epson or other firms. These have built-in Card Readers and high quality LCD screens. Hope this helps. Good luck with your Camera purchase!
I'd just take extra cards. I think whether you can DL directly to the iTouch will depend on whether the cord for your camera has the proper end on it for a jack on the iTouch. If you look at SD cards, the back of the package will tell you about how many photos it will hold, depending on the quality of image you intend to set your camera for. That might give you some idea.
Also, Frank, the use you will put the photos to may help you to decide how dense to make them, and therefor how many on a card. If you just want them for webpages, 3 MP is overkill, if you want to print them as posters you might use 12 MP. I tend to shoot most photos as 5 MP which, for me is a good balance. Plenty of ability to zoom in to the photo, and for printing on 8x10 or 4x6, or in a digital frame. YMMV
Frank, I haven't tried downloading photos directly from my camera to my Ipod Touch so can't help you there (not sure if you can) I'm fairly new to my Ipod Touch, I've only downloaded pictures from my computer to my Ipod Touch. It depends on the camera and the how many megapixels on how many images a card would hold. My Coolpix S3000 is 12.0 megapixels, I can keep it there and it will hold 500 images or I can go to the menu to image mode and change it to 8mg and it will hold 1000, etc. I also have a Nikon D40 that the card will hold 1000 or more.
I am fairly certain you can use a computer to load photos to an ipod touch, but I do not believe the touch yet has the capability to connect directly with cameras. My hubby and I did some research on this because we considered purchasing a touch for our upcoming trip. I believe if you can wait for the 4th generation touch, it will have that capability. I think it is scheduled to come out before Christmas. Someone correct me if I'm wrong....and if you do, I'm hitting up the store to get a touch ASAP!
Alyse is right. You can't download pictures directly from a digital camera to the IPod Touch. You need a computer with ITunes installed on it. Your best solution is to get a high capacity SD card.
This chart will give you an idea of how many photos you can store on various GBs of memory cards: http://tinyurl.com/2wxfqut So for about ten bucks you can purchase a single 8gbSD memory card and it will store 2400 high-quality JPG format photos.
There is a new device that's an SD reader for Ipod touch and iphones. Then you use an app to download from the sd card to the itouch. I haven't used it and the reviews were not promising. http://www.zoomitonline.com/ http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/zoomit/id343057034?mt=8 Instead just went out and bought a 16 GB SD card for my camera. I also have a 8 GB card.
Thanks all....I'll stick to the easiest thing which is to get an extra SD card or two.
The other thing you can do is that a lot of internet cafes and photo shops in Europe will put your photos on a CD for you for not much money. you can do that to back up your photos in case of a card failure, or if your cards are getting full. Haven't personally done it but I've seen signs in lots of net cafe windows offering the service.
You can use an iPad but not an iPod touch to back up photos at this time, at some later date it could be upgraded to do so though, there was a kit for earlier ipods to transfer photos from cameras. Memory cards are so cheap these days you can buy 8GB for less than $20 now. I would get several 4GB or even 2 GB as it is best to spread photos across several cards on a trip in case something goes wrong with one you have other cards and all your eggs are not in one basket.
I have used Zoomit to load photos from an SD card to my 2nd generation iPod Touch. I have then emailed photos to family and friends. I am not sure it loads them full resolution and still plan to travel with several SD cards. But it is nice to send travel emails home with photos. The Zoomit gadget looks a lot like the iPad photo connector.
One other thing I always do: Alternate the memory cards...use one for a day or part of a day, then change to another. That way if something goes wrong or you lose a card, you don't lose all the photos from a given portion of the trip. I know, anal. ** Often (as suggested above), if I am gone for a long time, I will also stop into a camera shop and have them burn the photos to a disk. Don't have them erase the photos as sometimes photo shops seem to compress or reduce the resolution of the originals (This has happened to me in the States when having the photos printed). I am not an expert, but I think they do it to save on the number of disks required. ** Buy plenty of memory cards. They're cheap online.
I would take multiple SD cards no higher than 4GB. I have had professional photographers tell me they never use anything higher than 4GB because if they have ALL their pictures on one card and anything malfunctions with the card, all their pictures would/could be gone forever. When I went to Europe with my first digital camera, I took about 6 cards, 2GB each, numbered each one and kept them safe in a small pouch designed for them that I purchased at my local camera store. I would also suggest that you put each one into your camera and take a few pictures on it before you leave. Early on in my trip I put in a brand new card and got an error message saying it wouldn't work. Somehow it worked itself out, but the experience made me very wary of malfunctions with these things.
Frank II, just curious, have you bought a digital Camera yet, and if so which one? If you want a few "general tips" after you've bought one, post another note. Cheers!
Thanks, Ken....I'm still researching to see what I want/need. I'm in no rush.
