Double rooms in hostels

Hi everybody!
I'll be traveling to Europe with my boyfriend, and we would like to stay in double rooms with private bath, but we are on a budget, so we are looking for the cheapest options. I've seen that a lot of hostels offer this option, I would like to know:
- Is it likely to find double rooms without making early reservations? If no, how much time earlier should I make the reservation?
- Is this the cheaper option? Or should I look for budget hotels or B&Bs?

Any other opinion or suggestion will be well received!

The facilities vary somewhat between different Hostels. The double rooms with private facilities tend to be popular so these often book up early. Although I usually use Dorm rooms in Hostels, I've looked at the rates and in some cases the rate for a double in a Hostel is close to that of a budget Hotel room (similar to the lodgings listed in Rick's Guidebooks).

One other point to consider is that some of the Hostel double rooms I've seen have had two single beds.

I usually prefer staying in HI Hostels (when I'm using Hostels that is), as I find the facilities fairly consistent from one location to another. Check Their Website for all the details. Having an HI membership (very reasonable cost) provides preffered booking and better rates).
