Dordogne day walks and kayaking

Hi,
I will be in the Dordogne area in France next summer with a group of friends. We want to find a house to rent for a week that we would use as our base for day hikes and kayaking.

What is the best place in the Dordogne to do this?

thanks,
Christine

You might also try gitesdefrance.com. I've used them to find places in the Perigord and Pyrenees to use as simple bases for my hiking trips. They also seem to have some rather spiffy places, which obviously don't interest me when traveling solo.

Last summer we rented a house in La Roque Gageac from the Right Vacation rental. We had a partial river view. Town is packed daily for the tour boats and the kayaks. Very centrally located to prehistoric sights and about 20 minutes or so to Sarlat. We could see Beynac and Domme (cutest town)
from our patio.

Just remember that distances might be small between sights, but driving time is much more than you would expect. We were told by several people that is would take us 2 hours to drive to Toulouse. It took more than 4 hours to go 95% of the way and another 1.5 hours to find our airport hotel.

I am coordinating a group of 50 people who will be staying in Sarlat and canoeing the river during our stay next summer. I am working through Tom, at www.canoes-loisirs.com, who is helping me arrange all aspects of our tour. He may be a handing contact for you, and VERY helpful!
