We are in late 70s, no major health or mobility issues. Accustomed to mountain driving. Want to spend 8-10 days on our own in the Dolomites. Mid-September. We hear key sites can be very overcrowded. Appreciate recommendations. Tre Cite? Cortina d’Amprezzo? Val Gardenia? Lago Misurina?Seceda? Ortizei? Cinque Torri? Better alternatives? Probably 2 bases. Relaxed pace. Use of gondolas. Also—easy via ferrata?
One "easy" option would be Alpe di Siusi (aka Seiser Alm) near Castelrotto (aka Kastelruth) which is where we stayed at Hotel Cavallino d'Oro.
There were lots of nice hiking options with gondolas and chair lifts. It's also near other Dolomite highlights and bigger cities. And, Castelrotto had its own local hikes too.
Thanks. Very helpful! I have read of that region. Are there dramatic mountains or just rolling meadows?
The Alpe di Siusi itself is rolling gentle slopes, valleys, etc. But the mountain peaks (which
you can't really access) are dramatic and visible.
As to easy via Ferrata, I think you need to expand on what you think easy means. Some
aspects may be easy for experienced users, but not for others. Are you comfortable
with heights. ladders, etc? Given age, can you keep pace if there are others on the
route, since some parts may be single file? Based on the rest of your post, I would
be sure to do the research, maybe look for youtube videos, so you know what you
are getting into.
Yes, lots to explore. I got good tips fromAI on how to work out best fit with a guide. Thanks for your input too.
