We are (2 adults and 2 kids) planing our summer trip. It will be a road trip from july 7 to august 4. We start and end in venice. We want to do Venice, Croatia (Istria) , Slovenia and Dolomites. Should we start with Croatia or Dolomites. What would be the best around july 10 ? And august 2-3 ?

Either way works well. Make sure u get hotel reservations for your itin., so i would say it depends on what lodging reservations u can get. I have been to all your itin pts. Peak season so book soon.
How old are the kids? Just so we know what activities might be appropriate.
And the rental car: it sounds like you are renting in Italy (Venice) and returning there. Just make sure the car is authorized to drive into Slovenia and Croatia.
You have four weeks to visit and the area you plan to visit is all good. We have not been to Croatia but the photos I have seen of Rovinj are compelling. We have been to Slovenia, and really enjoyed Piran on the coast (swimming in crystal clear Adriatic water) , Ljubljana, and Lake Bled.
Allow at least a week to ten days for the Dolomites. So much to see and do there, and very family-friendly.

The kids are 7 and 11 years old. Piran was on the list but we dont know if we should devote more than one night in that region.
