I love tap pay on my visa when I travel. However, do I need a physical card for the atm machines? Here at home I use tap for my Bank of America atm. I'll be in the Netherlands and Belgium. Do I need a physical atm/ debit card?
Thanks
All European ATMs and all cards and all banks? I dont know. I do know that in Hungary that my Hungarian Erste Bank card loaded on my Google Pay works fine in every ATM I have tried to use it, but my American Bank of America card loaded on my Google Pay does not work as a tap card in ATMs but does work for direct payment in stores, restraunts, etc. Using the physical card as tap at Hungarian ATMs does work.
Both of the ATM cards I used for travel were replaced last year while I was in Europe (yeah, that didn't go well). The earlier cards weren't tap-enabled. The new cards--I'm not sure. They have the symbol but didn't work when I tried to tap at a CapitalOne ATM here in the US back in October. I asked a Capital One staffer, and he said they were working on tap capability. I won't be using that card in the future, anyway.
This is by way of suggesting the reason you're not getting much response on this thread may simply be that a lot of us don't yet have cards that work when tapped.
There are ATMs that accept contactless (”tap”) and others that don’t. I’d plan to bring your card with you just in case you need it.
My experience has been mixed. I always try, but in the Netherlands, a year ago, I could not get tap to work, it seemed it was more for local debit cards. In Spain, I had luck, but only a minority of ATMs had the tap function.
Going to Malta and Sicily in a week or so, will try again, but since I already have about 150 euro from previous trips, not sure if I will need an ATM, maybe toward the end of the trip to replenish my stash.
Even my local bank's tap enabled ATM card often does not work with the tap function at my local bank's own ATMs. I would bring a physical card.
Given an ATM card doesn't take up much room, better to bring it along. I didn't need any cash on my trip to Amsterdam a couple years ago, but I would want a sure-fire way to get cash if it was necessary (and not rely on a cash advance on my regular Visa which is very expensive).
I had to resort to the ATM in France and Germany in 2024, most likely I used the tap function, if not , then the card was inserted. If with particular card, the tap function didn't work, e. g. , at a train ticket machine, then I pulled out another card. In Metz this particular SNCF machine did not accept any of my 4 credit cards, rejected all 4 US credit cards. .....not possible.
I moved to a different machine, the purchase by credit card went through just as I thought it would. I prefer not using cash for buying train tickets, it's wasting the cash I'm carrying. One of 3 ways the credit card will be accepted, tap, insert or swiping it.
