I recently reworked my wardrobe to include an exofficio/royal robbins shirt (one each to compare). Lightweight, wrinklefree, dry quick - they really are good for traveling light. After wearing them for a month, I decided I to get matching pants. Only problem is I have a 36"-38" inseam (depending on the brand), and those two manufacturers' pants only come down to my shins. Short of spats, any brands that come in tall?
you purchase custom made pants from Lands end. they make the pants to your exact measurements about 85.00
David,
You might also have a look at Tilley travel clothing. The pants are unhemmed, so you have more leeway with the length.
Good luck and happy travels!
If you're ever in the UK look for a clothing shop called 'High and Mighty'
They're a blessing
I'm the other way around - ordinary sized legs with a very elongated torso. Shirts are a nightmare.
If you Google "Big and Tall Men's Clothing" you will find lots of choices.
My brother had this problem w/rain and hiking pants. He got a great pair of lightweight hiking pants from REI that came in tall. I promptly 'borrowed' them after his first trip (i'm a 35" inseam and it's worse for women's pants) and must say I was impressed.
Check Sahalie's website, REI, EMS, definitely check Camp-Mor they have seriously the most informed and helpful and friendly staff ever! TONS of travel and outdoor gear and will even tell you when to go to another store and what exactly to buy. LOVE them! Old standards like LLBean and Eddie Bauer are also worth a shot. It's August and the end-of-season sales are beginning.
My husband has a nice pair of North Face brand zip-off pants in a tall size. They're good quality fabric, well-made and still look great after several adventures.
Second the North Face Paramount zip-off pants. The Long size is allegedly 34, but I'm a 34 and catch my heel on the pant leg, so they are definitely longer than 34. Great deep pockets, quick drying, well made. Only downer is that they have an included fabric belt with a clip, wearing your own belt is kinda klutzy with these. I had to buy online to get the Long sizes, local stores only had Reg.
I'm not sure about men's but I do know these brands make talls for women in hiking pants--Columbia, LL Bean, North Face, REI, Mountain Hardware, Ex Officio.
REI is a good place to start looking. Try www.campmor.com and www.sierratrading post.com and www.rei-outlet.com for discounted prices--usually last year's models.
David,
My husband has the same problem. REI has been the best so far for pants. He did just buy a pant that is made by REI that is a 34, but they seem to be on the long side. He buys his shirts from Duluth trading company. They make some really nice quality travel shirts in Tall and they wash beautifully in the sink and hang dry. Tilleys has nice clothes, but are expensive.
Thanks for all your suggestions. I've researched them all. (and have been out and about, hence the delay)
For those who follow after me, here's what I've found out so far...
By eliminating all that didn't have a true 36" + inseam (a long 34 just isn't going to cut it), and then pulling out all the 100% cotton ones (too slow to dry without wrinkles), I'm left with:
Tilley , REI, Columbia (zip-off only).
Haven't yet tried on the REI or Tilley (for 3x the price), but I didn't like the Columbia because the leg pockets are pushed up too high to allow for the zippers. (I regularly wear BDUs, even at home, and always have the leg pockets packed with the infant/toddler supplies - in place of a diaper bag)
I'm off to find an REI and a Tilley dealer.
I just got my new Travelsmith catalog and happened to notice they had zip off pants in 34". I didn't look at other pants but I would think they had that length in others as well.
David,
My husband is 6'6 and always buys 36 inseam. The travel pant he bought at REI is made by Mountain hardware. Also the REI brand is less expensive and they also come in 36. Check out their web stie for sales. He just bought three pair and they were all on sale for $20.00- $30.00. They also have tall shirts by REI brand that are nice.
Bill - Regarding those pants that have a built-in belt...I run into this frequently (I'm always looking for the ideal travel clothes). This may sound crazy, but on many pants that have a belt built-in, you can (c-a-r-e-f-u-l-l-y) slice out the built-in belt and then use your own. This is a requirement for me because my "money belt" system is the "secret pocket" that hangs from a belt (I hang it in my front pocket in most places, but in particularly dodgy locations I can wear in inside the pants - works great, is 100% secure, and more comfy than a conventional money belt). To use it though, you must have a real (detachable) belt. So if you find pants that are otherwise perfect but have a built-in belt, you can (usually) get rid of the belt.
