Please settle an argu - um, point of discussion between me and my spouse... She says our basic, cheapo, plastic, disposable razors will not be permitted in our carry-on bag. I say that's nonsense, we've flown with these in our carry-on bags many times and they're perfectly acceptable to the TSA and foreign security agencies. I am a firm believer in "carry on only." For some reason, my wife wants to check her bag (this is a new development, we've generally flown with carry-ons only before). I suspect she's looking for an excuse to check a bag and is trying to use the razors as leverage (but don't tell her that - if we can't bring cheap razors we get at Costco, I'd just buy a few once we get there). So - plastic, disposable razors OK in carry on, or more dangerous than exploding underpants? I await the group's ruling. Thanks!
I have never had a problem carrying on a disposable razor.
I have never had a problem either. Think it would be easy to look up though.
Well ,, just looked it up on the TSA site,, how fast and easy is google search. Disposable razors are absolutely fine in your carryon. Wife is wrong( and it pains me to say that, lol )
David, Unfortunately your Wife is incorrect concerning the Disposable Razors. They are permitted by TSA. If I were in the same situation, I'd "gently" point out (without any hint of "I told you so") that Razors are allowed in carry-on, but also state that if she wants to check luggage you agree with her. I'd want to allow some way for her to feel that she made her point in the argum.....sorry, discussion. Good luck!
Ken,,you are a saint among men,, other men, please take lessons from Ken,,,
No, you definately need the raise the "I WAS RIGHT" banner and drape it across the living room. (Us men don't get to do that very often....)
Disposable razors are okay, so are tweezers and nail clippers. I usually carry a small pair of nail clippers with my dry toiletries but took it out this trip because I was sure my wife would pack some and didn't need to double up. Unfortunately she didn't pack either clippers or tweezers because she didn't think they were allowed. We went without clippers but I had to buy a pair of too expensive tweezers when we got there.
I always put my Gilette Fusion in the liquids back so they can see it. I've never had a problem.
From the TSA website:
"Razor-Type Blades -(disposable razors and their cartridges are permitted)
Thanks, everyone. That's pretty much as I remembered it - I know we've flown with these things in carry-ons many, many times. My wife has really surprised me with the sudden "what? we're not going to check bags?!" routine. She appears shocked at the notion. We never check bags when flying to Europe, for all the valid reasons mentioned here. If she wants to check things on the way back, that's fine (I might, too). My primary concern is that if our bags get lost on the way over, it could easily derail our tightly-scripted schedule, since we move on the day after we arrive and it would be a real PITA to have to try to arrange a way for our bags to catch up to us a day or two later. Yes, I will be gentle, but will point out that the experts are all in 100% agreement on this, it's no problem. If she really wants to check a bag for some other reason, I'll just let her know that if the bag doesn't make it with us to our destination, we would probably have to miss a day or two of the trip, and ask her which things she would choose to cut out while we wait for the bag to arrive (as she wears the same clothes she began the trip in 48 hours earlier). Ultimately it's her decision. If she's not happy, nobody's happy. I'll save the "I was RIGHT!" stuff for some future discussion when it's really needed...). Thanks.
David, Are you using multiple airlines to reach your destination in Europe? I've been very fortunate (so far) and have never had to deal with "lost luggage". My trips usually involve three flights each way either with the same airline or code share flights, and I always have one checked bag. However, I always take a few "backup items" in my carry-on, so I could likely function for several days or perhaps even a week if necessary. Cheers!
Ken, We're flying on a single ticket (used frequent flyer miles) Seattle > Frankfurt on Lufthansa, connecting there to Ljubljana on Adria Airlines. The connection time is a full 4 hours, and I assume it will be handled with Teutonic efficiency. Lufthansa and Adria are partners. The chances of the bag misconnecting are probably pretty low. But if the bag does misconnect, I assume it would be the next day or longer before it actually arrived in Ljubljana. We plan to move on quickly, and have a carefully orchestrated plan after that, parts of which could come crashing down if we were delayed by a day or two at the outset. I think the chances of the bag not making it are small, but if it happened there would be significant headaches. As I see no good reason to check the bag (other than that's what my dear wife seems to want, which is of course always valid reason regardless of what I think), it just seems like a chance we don't need to take. FWIW I have had bags misconnect a couple times on previous trips. On the homeward leg, it's a non-issue. But once I had my bag go missing on the outbound leg of a trip to Mexico (Cozumel) and it took 3 days for it to arrive. I have close friends who never saw their bags again (multiple bags) after they disappeared down the checked bagged chute (a non-stop flight from Seattle to Hawaii, not a complicated/exotic route). I now try hard not to check things outbound when a trip is tightly scheduled unless I have a real reason to. Sometimes we have good reasons (flying trans-pacific, lugging scuba gear and/or gifts for family/friends). But for 2 weeks in Croatia, doesn't seem necessary to me. We'll see - we pack tonight and leave tomorrow.
Has she said WHY she wants to check a bag? Is she wanting to take more clothes or larger/more toiletries? Maybe there is a reason you can help her deal with. If she 'needs'/ feels she needs more 'shampoo', etc. you could offer to take an extra small bottle in YOUR 3-1-1 bag, etc. If it is so she has room to bring things back, offer to pack a flat pack bag each, so you can check 1 or more on the return trip. If she is wanting to take a picnic set with a knife/wine corkscrew, suggesst buying one there!!
David, how long you been married?
My suggestion: give up this struggle. Any attempt to win is futile. Let me repeat: YOU CANNOT WIN! Please, for the sake of world peace, stop this now! Doesn't matter what the TSA website says, disposable razors cannot be brought on the plane.
If you have a tightly scheduled itinerary you could simply leave that with all the other information you give out in case your luggage gets indeed delayed. We had that happening before: all our luggage (for 4 people over Christmas so we needed the extra space for gifts!) got delayed. Left an itinerary for the upcoming 2 week trip that included dates and 4 different places. Suitcases 1 + 2 arrived at our first location 4 days after landing, suitcase 3 was waiting for us at location 3 on day 8, and suitcase 4 showed up at location 3 on day 10 - the day before we were about to move on to our final destination. This is pretty much our worst case scenario due to an unexpected winter storm in Europe that had shut down a dozen major and minor airports .... and we still survived it just fine ;-)
